Impulsive on the sidelines, the coach has amassed 35 yellows and six reds since November 2020
Champion of the Brazilian Super Cup last Saturday, Abel Ferreira he lifts the trophies for Palmeiras in almost the same proportion as he is sent off for arbitration. For two years and three months at the helm of the Alviverde team, the Portuguese coach has seven trophies and received 41 cards, 35 yellow and six red. Therefore, on average, he takes six cards per title won.
The coach’s behavior on the sidelines has begun to cause discussion as often as his talents are praised. The intelligence of the Portuguese, the ability to assemble an extremely successful Palmeiras and empower many of his athletes is unanimous. But the professional’s temperament has also been debated.
In August 2021, Abel promised that it would improve your standing before the judges. “I live football intensely and passionately. I promise I will do my best to perform even better. I like to learn and I want to be a better coach every day,” he said at the time.
His behavior is disapproved of by the coach’s wife, according to him. As punishment for her impulsiveness on the sidelines, she instructed her husband that, after each sending off, the coach would have to sell one of his cars to her. He is passionate about motor sports. “Football is about emotions. You lose control and you can’t lose it,” acknowledged the coach in September last year.
Persecution
However, he continued to complain about referees’ decisions and saw the number of times he was booked increase. Until in June last year, after a goalless draw with Atlético Mineiro for the Brasileirão, he rants about being harassed by Brazilian referees.
“I feel I’m being persecuted by the Brazilian referees. In particular by this gentleman,” he said. The “gentleman” he was referring to was Wilton Pereira Sampaio, the judge against whom the coach accumulates the most protests.
Sampaio was the referee in the match against Atlético last year and it was Sampaio who whistled in the Brazilian Super Cup which Palmeiras won by beating Flamengo 4-3 at Mané Garrincha, Brasilia, in the first big match of the season.

The Goiás referee, who is a FIFA staffer and refereed matches at the last World Cup in Qatar, first showed Abel a yellow card for “acting in a way that shows disrespect for the game”, as wrote in the match summary. Then, in the additions to the duel, he expelled the Palmeiras commander for “protesting the arbitration decisions by punching the air and kicking the audio capture microphone”.
The reason for Abel’s revolt at the end of the game was the missed goal from a corner kick in favor of Palmeiras. “The coach had a very strong reason (to complain), because I can’t understand the main judge, two linesmen and two next to me and nobody saw that it was a corner,” he questioned.
“I was sent off for that. I didn’t say anything to the referee. How could the best Brazilian referee not see that move? Neither him nor the assistants.”
Abel has already received three cards in five games in 2023, two yellow and one red. In 2022 he has been booked 17 times. In 2021 it took 14 cards. In 2020 there were seven.
Assistants João Martins and Vitor Castanheira were also sent off for protesting refereeing in the Super Cup. The two Portuguese are the substitutes in Abel’s absence. They will have to comply with the suspension in Palmeiras’ next match in a tournament organized by the CBF. That is, the command of the team will be missing at the debut of the Brasileirão or the Copa do Brasil. The options to replace them are assistants Carlos Martinho and Andrey Lopes, Cebola.
Abel commanded Palmeiras in 185 games. That’s 107 wins, 44 draws and 34 defeats. Palmeiras has not had its coach on 20 occasions. It was commanded 18 times by João Martins and twice by Vitor Castanheira. Martins records 12 wins, five draws and one loss. Castanheira has a draw and a setback.
third largest champion
By lifting his seventh cup, Abel Ferreira reached third place in the ranking of coaches with the most titles for Palmeiras and first among foreigners, together with Ventura Cambon. He also became the only Palmeiras coach to win the league title in four consecutive seasons. Furthermore, with the 2023 Brazilian Super Cup, the Portuguese equaled Felipão with the most finals played by the club: ten apiece.
The Portuguese has won two Libertadores (2020 and 2021), Copa do Brasil (2020), Brasileirão (2022), Recopa Sudamericana (2022), Paulistão (2022) and Supercopa do Brasil (2023). With the result, the Portuguese leaves Luiz Felipe Scolari behind.
