Dave Bautista has ceased his attempts to bring to life the villain of the DC worlds: Bane. But, where did this desire to embody one of the mythical enemies of ‘Batman’ come from?
It all started in 2021, when Bautista commented at JusticeCon that he had met with WarnerBros. to request to play the villain in case a new movie is made in which it appeared. Back then, the actor claimed: “I’m not kidding. They told me, ‘We’re not even casting Bane.’ To which I replied, ‘I don’t care, I’ll do it.“
What in 2021 seemed like a remote option could now have been close to becoming a reality with the addition of James Gunn to the command of the DC Universe. Gunn and Bautista shared a set on the set of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, from the UCM. So, Could they meet again in another superhero saga? Apparently, as Bautista commented in an interview with insidersit will not be so.
“I’ve had conversations with James about it,” he commented. “I think because of the direction it is following (with the idea of repeating the entire Universe, starting from scratch with young and fresh faces) It doesn’t fit me and they should do it that way. I think that for the DC Universe to be revived, you need to start from the ground up and you need to hire young actors.”
“They have to plan for the next 15 years and I don’t think they can fit in with me. I get it.”
After that, Bautista added: “I don’t want to play a character that I won’t do justice to. I don’t think it’s the goal of my career right now. I don’t know if I could withstand the physical exertion and it wouldn’t give longevity to the plan that exists for the movies. I don’t know if I’m his man.”
The last time we saw Bane on the big screen, he was accompanied by the face (practically invisible by the mask) of Tom Hardy, in Christopher Nolan’s film, ‘The Dark Knight Rises’. With the restructuring that James Gunn plans for the franchise, we have also learned that there will be a new movie about ‘Superman’, exploring a younger version of the character (which excludes Henry Cavill from the main cast).
The third ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ film is scheduled for release in May of this year. The tape will mark the end of the joint adventures of its protagonists within the UCM. Bautista recently stated that he was relieved to say goodbye to his character, Drax.
“I am very thankful for Drax. But it’s a relief that it’s over,” shared the actor in an interview with GQ Magazine. “No.or everything was nice. It was hard playing that character. The makeup process was starting to wear on me.”
