The Last of Us it’s the series of the moment, and it doesn’t look like it’s about to run out. On Sunday (29), 6.4 million people tuned in to watch the third installment of the post-apocalyptic series on HBO and HBO Max, according to Nielsen and company data.
That’s a 12% increase from last week’s ratings, which already sets a record for the biggest Week 2 ratings growth for an HBO original drama series in network history. Sunday viewership was also up 37% from the series premiere, which was viewed on the same day by 4.7 million people.
It only took two episodes for HBO to renew the series for a second season. And that was to be expected, considering the first episode marked the second-biggest debut since House of the Dragon since the release of waterfront empire In 2010.
The first two episodes of The Last of Us average 21.3 million viewers. With that, HBO now has four current series that have cross-platform audiences averaging over 15 million viewers per episode. This marks the first time HBO has had multiple current series draw more than 15 million viewers simultaneously across all genres.
The first season of House of the Dragon is the best, averaging 29 million viewers per episode. The Last of Us comes in second with 21.3 million, followed by the second season of euphoria averaging 19.5 million per episode e The White Lotusup to 15.5 million.
Production based on the PlayStation game, The Last of Us takes place 20 years after the destruction of modern civilization. Joel, a hardened survivor turned smuggler, is hired to break 14-year-old Ellie out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts out as a small job soon turns into a brutal journey as both must traverse the United States and depend on each other for survival.
The Last of Us has a cast that includes the likes of Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey, Gabriel Luna, Anna Torv, Nico Parker, Murray Bartlett and Nick Offerman, as well as Melanie Lynskey, Storm Reid, Merle Dandridge, Jeffrey Pierce, Lamar Johnson, Keivonn Woodard, Graham Greene, Elaine Miles, Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker.
The first three episodes of The Last of Us are available on HBO Max. The series will have a total of nine episodes, always premiering Sundays at 11 p.m. on HBO and HBO Max.
