Knight of the Moon: What do we need to learn from the end of the Marvel series and the postgeneric scene?

Warning, spoilers. Before continuing to read this article, it is advisable to watch the last episode of Moon Knight.

After six episodes, the Knight of the Moon series is coming to an end. And the last chapter, which is rich in twists and turns, marks the final battle between Mark / Steven (Oscar Isaac) and Arthur Harrow (Ethan Hawke). While Stephen sacrificed himself for Mark in later life, Mark was unable to leave his alter ego in the wilderness. He returns to her, and his actions persuade Osiris to bring them back to life.

Mark and Stephen, who have decided to put an end to Khonshu, make a deal with him, who has meanwhile been released by Leila (May Kalamavi). Mark and Stephen agree to defeat Harrow and the deity Amit if Khonshu (F. Murray Abraham) then releases them. For her part, Leila admits to being a temporary avatar of Taureth or Tavernet (Antonia Salib), the patron saint of Egyptian childbirth and a symbol of fertility, and is transformed into a superhero.

Leila then joins Mark and Steven in defeating Harrow, while Khonshu defeats Amit. Thanks to the powers of the gods, Mark / Stephen and Leila performed magic to lock Amit Harrow in the body. Khonshu asks Mark / Steven to kill Harrow, but Mark / Steven does not want to be under Khonshu’s control again. The latter then frees Mark / Steven from his authority and control.

But Mark and Stephen still find themselves in a psychiatric hospital to their great surprise. Mark and Stephen, who possess their skills and know better about their mental state, refuse to lock themselves in this reality and return to their lives. Mark / Stephen then wakes up in their bed as at the beginning of the Marvel series, the circle is over and we think Mark / Stephen will finally be freed from the Egyptian deity. But a few references to the final episode and its post-credit scene prove the opposite.

Several references already suggest this, especially in episodes 1, 3, and 4, and the post-credit scene confirms this: Mark / Stephen has a third identity caused by his dissociative identity disorder. This much more violent identity intervened several times to save Mark / Stephen, leaving a bloody mark behind him.

And it was a person who was locked in a third sarcophagus in a psychiatric hospital in episode 4. This other identity still intervenes in Episode 6 to help Mark / Steven in the final battle, leaving Mark and Steven missing after being cut off.

In the post-credit scene of the end of the Moon Knight, we find Arthur Harrow in a psychiatric hospital. He is taken away by an unknown figure who forces him to put in a limousine to find Khonshu. Arthur does not understand what is happening, but Khonshu explains that he was not going to leave Mark / Steven alone, who he says do not even know the content of their mental illness.

Indeed, Khonshu works with a third identity: Jake Lockley. In the comics, the identity of Moon Knight is a taxi driver who roams the poor of New York City to gather information about the underworld of crime. In the Marvel Studios series, Steven is quite kind, intelligent, and self-assured, while Mark is more arrogant, fearless, and self-assured. So Jake is an even darker and more violent part of the protagonist.

And this is Jake who will drop Arthur Harrow to fulfill Khonshu’s will. This means that Mark / Stephen / Jake has not finished the Egyptian deity and that they still possess the powers of the Knight of the Moon. Find out how the hero will unite in the MCU and whether he will intervene with his multiple identities in a new adventure in the world of Marvel.
