Moraes authorizes the PF to collect a statement from Do Val on Bolsonaro’s alleged plan

Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), has authorized the Federal Police (PF) to take the statement of Senator Marcos do Val (Podemos-ES) in the investigation into the acts of coup that took place in Brasilia on January 8th.

In asking for authorization to schedule the interrogation, delegate Raphael Soares Astini said that the senator “recently revealed on his social networks that he has relevant information” for the investigation. Marcos do Val accused former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) of trying to stage a coup.

In a dispatch on Thursday 2, Moraes said the “circumstance needs to be clarified”. The minister also pointed out that “coup intention” can be classified as a crime of coup and violent abolition of the democratic rule of law.

The senator announced he was stepping down from office and said Bolsonaro tried to force him to participate in a coup attempt.

The request to hear the senator was made in the inquiry investigating the role of the authorities in the extremist protests in Praça dos Três Poderes. The list of suspects includes the governor dismissed from the Federal District, Ibaneis Rocha, and the former Minister of Justice and former Secretary of Security Anderson Torres, who is arrested preventively.

The PF has three other lines of investigation, divided by nuclei due to the volume of suspects. The fronts of the investigation target instigators and intellectuals who are the authors, executors and financiers of the coup plotters. Bolsonaro is also under investigation, suspected of instigating the radicals. The former president has been in the United States since late last year.
