With a Framework Laptop motherboard, the computer features a 4K monitor with a 120Hz refresh rate and two vertical iPad screens
Most of today’s notebooks are versatile enough to become tablets. But some are exploring other avenues by including extra screens to deliver an immersive experience and expand productivity. This is the case with Matt, from the channel Do-it-yourself benefitswho built a computer with three screens which is very easy to carry around.
The whole project took advantage of the Framework Laptop motherboard. In case you don’t know, this is a modular notebook manufacturer, so the hardware is easily upgradeable. In addition, the company contributes to reducing the emission of e-waste and offers a complete dish at modders.
And it was precisely this benefit that attracted the attention of the YouTube channel. In a video posted on Tuesday (31), Matt looked for alternatives to create a notebook with three screens.
First, he took an already assembled laptop and tried to place additional screens next to each other. However, this idea was put aside as it weighed down the computer cover too much and caused another problem: ergonomics.
Next, the presenter took two iPad screens vertically and imagined what it would be like to place them on the side of a 15-inch notebook. Even the idea was not very good.
With the results in hand, the solution found was to build a machine from scratch. For this, Matt took a Framework Laptop motherboard and plugged in the world’s first 4K resolution, 120Hz refresh rate display.
Next, the 9.7-inch panels of the iPad were connected to the motherboard with the help of an Adafruit module. However, since the piece requires a direct connection to the socket, an adapted USB-C cable had to be assembled so that the monitors could become operational without depending on an external power source.
The three-screen computer is ergonomic and portable
With everything working, the youtuber moved on to the next stage of the project: building the computer case with the help of a 3D printer and assembling it.
And I must anticipate: it was a grace!
The result was a beautiful case, which offers an alternative to a laptop. In addition, the device has two holders to keep it upright at a comfortable height for the neck and spine, thus offering comfortable daily use.
However, even with an internal battery and three built-in monitors, you’ll need to use an external keyboard and mouse to control it. Which is not a problem, let’s face it.
