Released this Thursday (2), the film fursat is the latest blockbuster of Bollywood – the film industry in India known for its mass production of films with astonishing characteristics of the country’s cinema – and it carries a major differential: it was shot entirely using Apple smartphones, especially the iPhone 14 Pro.
Like many films from the region, fursat is a romantic musical short that, according to Apple itself, “depicts the story of how love can be found and loved by appreciating the present, rather than living in the past or worrying about the future.”
In an interview with PetaPixel, director of fursat Vishal Bhardwaj said that “the iPhone is taking away the limitations we had as children”. He continued, “We didn’t have the luxury of cinematic quality video that the iPhone offers today to all budding filmmakers. I’ve never had this scale of production in my films before. And that says what the iPhone can achieve.
Available on Apple’s official YouTube channel, fursat features Bollywood stars including Ishaan Khatter and Wamiqa Gabbi who is known for Netflix series May. The film has a total duration of 30 minutes, and goes down in history for being yet another film recorded entirely with a smartphone, in this case the iPhone 14 Pro.
While somewhat different, this isn’t the first or only example of a film shot entirely on the iPhone. Some examples are the 2020 Apple short film directed by Damien Chazelle Vertical cinemathe 2022 film by Park Chan-wook Life is but a dream and the recent Through the Five Steps by Peng Fe published in 2023.
fursat is available in its entirety on Apple’s YouTube channel, and you can watch the film below:
