Judoka Daniel Cargnin wins the silver medal at the Grand Slam in Paris

After having distinguished himself in the category up to 66 kg, the judoka Daniel Cargnin now it shines against heavier rivals. This Saturday, she won the silver medal in the Grand Slam in Parisone of the most traditional tournaments in the modality, in the dispute up to 73 kg, the category in which he fell for the current Olympic cycle.

In the French capital, Cargnin only stopped in the final, against the current world number 1. The Brazilian was defeated by the Georgian Lasha Shavdatuashvili via ippon. The rival, in addition to leading the category standings, has three Olympic medals to his credit. Cargnin has one, the bronze won at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics.

To arrive at the decision, the Brazilian judoka left four opponents on the street. The first was the Cypriot Kyprianos Andreou, of waza-ari. Then, already in the round of 16, he eliminated the Turkish Umalt Demirel by ippon. In the quarterfinals, the triumph was over Urunbayar Odgerel, from Mongolia, in another waza-ari. And, in the semifinals, he repeated the dose, against the Canadian Arthur Margelidon.

The great Paris campaign confirms the good momentum of the Brazilian judoka, who had already distinguished himself at the World Championships last year, already in the new category. Cargnin was a bronze medalist at the time. Now, with silver, he already has good points in the Olympic rankings, which will define the qualifications for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The podium closed Brazil’s recent fast in the Grand Slam played in France. In the last two editions, in 2022 and 2021, the Brazilian team went blank, without medals.

Brazil was also represented this Saturday by Larissa Pimenta, in the up to 52 kg category. She finished fifth after attempting bronze. In the medal contest, she was disqualified for a catch deemed illegal by the referee.

The expert Ketleyn Quadros, Olympic medalist in Beijing-2008, finished in seventh place in the category up to 63 kg. Two-time world champion Rafaela Silva was the disappointment of the day, as she fell in the round of 16 in the under 57kg dispute, as did Jessica Pereira. Eric Takabatake was also eliminated in the round of 16, in the 66 kg category.
