AP – A Kim Petras2022 was a great year: the German singer and songwriter received his first nomination for the Grammys 2023made her acting debut on the HBO series Los Spooky and released a single with acclaimed pop producer Max Martin.

Inspired by the irreverent attitude of their Grammy-nominated duet, wickedthat she is Sam Smith will present at the awards night on Sunday the 5th (broadcast begins at 10pm Brasilia time on TNT and HBO Max), Petras decided to delve into the waters of religious language and themes, collaborating with Martin on the composition If Jesus was a rock star.

“I’ve never had the opportunity to learn about spirituality or be accepted by God. To me it’s like a mythology. To me it’s like a fairy tale or any other story,” she said during a recent interview with the Associated Press.

Petras, who is transgender, understands that her involvement with religion is subversive and a way to process trauma.

“Even as a little girl it was like, ‘I’m going to hell.’ That was my experience growing up,” she said. “If I had the chance to be a part of the religion, maybe I would have. And maybe I would have lived more the way the people protesting at my shows want me to live.”

Though he’s been making music for over a decade, Petras’ rise to fame didn’t happen overnight. And while grateful for her success, she acknowledges that this level of stardom makes her and her music more vulnerable to criticism.

“It’s more serious now. It’s more like now people are really watching, and there are a lot of eyes out there that maybe aren’t my fans, maybe they’re not that nice to me,” she said. “But I feel like if I’m constantly building, I can handle it.”

Before his career took off, Petras released music as an independent artist under his own label. She credits artists like Robyn and Charli XCX, who have also released music independently, for inspiring the creation of BunHead Records, named after Sailor Moon’s hairstyle.

In addition to achieving several career milestones in 2022, Petras also hit a personal best, turning 30. But the pop star said her philosophy on her age is very much in line with that of the legendary musician. Princebecame famous for not celebrating his birthday.

“Age doesn’t matter to me,” she said. “I’ll never stop going to clubs or loving gay clubs. That’s who I am.”

Keeping its essence, its new single brrr, which will be part of their first full-length, has very sensual lyrics and many touches of electronic music. But Petras hopes to do more with his music than provide a catchy beat to get people dancing on the floor.

“It’s a scary time for kids and transgender people and I think there’s a lot of things they really need to improve,” she said. “I’m scared for the trans community and I hope I can be the person to make them forget these issues and have fun for a while.”
