The sequel to ‘Gladiator’, one of the most successful action films of the 2000s, finally has a release date. According to the information of expirationParamount Pictures has scheduled the release of “Gladiator 2” for November 22, 2024.
The plot of the new production takes place 25 years after the events of the first film, which starred Maximus (Russell Crowe) as the Roman general who went on to become one of Rome’s strongest and most skilled gladiators. Now, the film will focus on Lucius (Spencer Treat Clark), son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and nephew of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix).
: Maximus was a Roman general admired by Emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris), who made public his intention to leave the throne to his friend and confidant, not his ambitious son, Commodus. The preference aroused the wrath of the direct heir, who then killed his father, seized power and ordered the death of Maximus and his family.
Massimo manages to escape the ordered death, but the fate was not the same for his wife and son, who are barbarously murdered. Devastated, the general ends up becoming a slave and, after other twists and turns, rises to the title of gladiator. Lucius accompanies the fighter’s trajectory and quest for revenge. Besides becoming one of the best gladiators the Colosseum has ever seen, he kills Commodus and ends up becoming a hero to the boy, which should affect the adult version of him.
It’s still unclear who will play Lucius in “Gladiator 2,” however, Paul Mescal (from “Normal People” and “The Lost Daughter”) has been negotiated to live the character in the sequence. The new feature film will again be directed by Ridley Scott – a continuation desired by the director after the success of the original.
“Gladiator” is considered a blockbuster, grossing more than $460 million at the worldwide box office. It was nominated for 12 Academy Awards, winning five, including Best Picture. The production also earned Crowe an Academy Award for Best Actor.
It’s worth noting that Maximus dies in the first film after the battle with Commodus ends, making it impossible to continue his story in a sequel.
