Mila Kunis suffered a lot during the recording of “Black Swan”: “It was the hardest thing I have ever done”

The 2010 anime-inspired film “Black Swan” featured great performances from Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis as ballet dancers, though they had to go through rigorous training to do so.

For Natalie Portman, the film is one of the best she has starred in and her sacrifice to portray young dancer Nina Sayers meant she won the 2011 Best Actress Oscar.

For her part, Mila Kunis, who was responsible for portraying the antagonist Lily, was left with a very bad physical experience due to the hard training.

Mila Kunis suffered a lot when recording ‘Black Swan’: ‘I will never dance again’

After a period away from major productions, Mila Kunis has resurfaced with films like “Luckiest Girl Alive” (2022) and with her fellow cast members from “That ’70 Show” in the Netflix sequel.

However, one of her most acclaimed roles was that of Lily in “Black Swan”, the talented dancer with a radical and crazy personality, who makes Nina’s life miserable in the dance company in New York.

To step into Lily’s dancing shoes, Mila Kunis had to undergo rigorous training under trainer Alexandra Blacker, with five-hour routines every day for four months.

The actress confessed to “W Magazine”, in March 2011, how much she suffered during that training period, during which she went from knowing nothing about ballet to dancing like a pro.

“I had never danced in my life. I trained for four months, seven days a week, five hours a day, including an hour of cardio a day. I had a day off on my birthday. I lost 20 kilos. I tore a link. I dislocated my shoulder. I have two scars on my back. And it was worth every minute.”

However, although Kunis accepted that it was worth it in the end for the outcome in the film and was amazed by his moves, the ordeal left a scar on her and it’s something she wouldn’t do again.

“I’ll never dance again! When I first saw the movie, I was like, It’s great that the performance was caught on camera, because I’m never going to wear those pointe shoes again. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done.”

The actress said that the experience in the film made her understand the concept of “mind over matter” and since then she has not subjected herself to another role as rigorous as the one she had in “Black Swan”.

The film received 5 Academy Award nominations and Mila Kunis for her captivating performance as Lily was nominated for Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice Awards and Screen Actors Guild Awards.
