TikTok had a daily average of 1h47 minutes of use, ahead of Snapchat (1h14) and YouTube (1h07), among audiences between 4 and 18 years old

OR Tick tock was the social networking app where children and teenagers spend the most time during the day for the second consecutive year. A study by software company Qustodio revealed that the short-video platform was even ahead snapchat Comes from Youtubeleader in retreats from previous years.

The data is most expressive among the youngest audience measured, between the ages of 4 and 18, showing the influencing power of TikTok. Last year, TikTok’s average watch time was 107 minutes a day versus YouTube’s just 67 minutes, demonstrating the vast dominance of Chinese over Americans.

Other underperforming social networks are Snapchat (72 minutes), Instagram (45 minutes), Facebook (20 minutes), Pinterest (16 minutes) e Twitter (10 minutes). It is worth mentioning that all of these are data referring to children under 18, which explains that Snapchat occupies the third position.

Even streaming is no match for TikTok

Not even video streaming services were able to block short videos. Netlifx averaged 48 minutes a day, while Disney+ hooked young people for 40 minutes.

When looking at data from the US alone, where TikTok is most popular, screen time rises to an average of 113 minutes per day. It’s more than Snapchat (90 minutes), YouTube (77 minutes), Netflix (52 minutes) and Pinterest (20 minutes).

The good news for the Google is that YouTube has grown by 20% over the previous year, reaching the aforementioned 67 minutes. This is the longest-running video seen since Qustodio began polling in 2019. Netflix and amazon Prime Video also saw growth in popularity: 7% and 10% respectively.

The under-18 audience has significant content viewing power, accounting for 18% of total views in 2022. The average time spent on all services is 45 minutes.

Measures to protect young people

These data confirm a perspective that communication professionals already know: social networks are full of children and adolescents. In the case of TikTok, for example, children under 12 are prohibited, but they access the network through false age accounts or through parental profiles.

It’s also proof of how the short video format has caught on over the past couple of years. Instagram needed to launch Reels and YouTube was betting on Short to compete. By the way, the format created by Google it reached 50 billion daily viewsshowing a sharp growth compared to last year — about 30 billion.

Reels, on the other hand, seems to have been a safe bet, but ended up taking the focus off Instagram. The head of the platform, Adamo Mosseri, admitted that his the service has too many videoswhich is why he plans to tip the scales for 2023. In Qustodio’s research, Insta was out of the top 5 social media apps in the US, UK and Australia, which shows that it’s a network with an audience older.

Recently, TikTok has started doing this test a system of “strikes”. to provide more transparency and ban those who do not comply with the rules. The social network also has bet on family synchronization as a solution to help parents keep track of their children’s activities on the social network. Measures are needed more than ever, mainly due to fatal tendencies, like the Argentinian onein which a child died after the challenge Blackout challenge.
