Steven Soderbergh tells what happens with the sequel and what is his concept of “sexy movie”.
Steven Soderbergh, director of the latest film Magic Mike, returns to the stripper franchise on the big screen with this “last dance.”, again starring Channing Tatum as “Magic” Mike Lane. The sequel, also starring Salma Hayek, may not show any nudity beyond shirtless dancers, but Soderbergh thinks he’s still very sexy.
“For me, it’s about being sexy. It’s not about the sex itself, or whether the movie is explicit. There’s no nudity in [mi pelĂcula de 1998] Out of Sight. There are no nudes in Magic Mike’s Last Dance. There’s not even a thong”, he explains to Rolling Stone. “And yet it was our desire to make a sexy movie.”
And added: “What is sexy is intimacy and genuine emotion. Something that feels alive, and electric, and has the potential for vulnerability. That can be sexy.”
“You’re letting someone into your heart, and that’s scary. They can hurt you,” Soderbergh continues. “The really radical thing to do right now, it seems to me, instead of showing the beginning of the relationship when everything is hot and light due to attraction – that’s easy – is to show people who have been married for 20 years to whom that’s still true. Where you don’t even care. They’ve been together for 20 years and they’re still attracted to each other.”
In February 2022, Tatum, 42, joked that he didn’t initially want to do another Magic Mike because it would mean overworking himself to meet body expectations. unhealthy for striptease scenes. “That might be why I didn’t want to do a third one,” Tatum said on Kelly Clarkson’s talk show at the time while holding up a shirtless photo of himself from the franchise’s second film, Magic Mike XXL. “Because I have to look like this.”
“It’s hard to look like that. Even if you do work out, being this fit isn’t natural,” she added. “It’s not even healthy. You have to starve yourself. I don’t think when you’re that skinny it’s really healthy.”
Tatum previously told PEOPLE that he wanted the third film in the female-focused franchise to feature new styles of dancing: “I want it to be the Super Bowl of striptease. I want dances like we have never been able to do in the other two films, because we had to be honest with what is the reality of that world, that it is not a great dance”. Soon we will be able to see it in the cinema.
