A live-action Spider-Man Noir series based on the Marvel comics was announced this Thursday (9) and will be coming to Amazon.
The as-yet-untitled series follows a grizzled aging superhero in 1930s New York City. The information was first revealed by Variety. A source close to the project told Deadline that the series is set in its own universe involving an alternate Spider-Man who isn’t named Peter Parker.
The production will be written and produced by Oren Uziel, and will be developed with the producers of Spider-Man in The Spider-Verse, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and Amy Pascal, who will serve as executive producers. Sony Pictures Television, with which Lord and Miller have an overall deal, is the studio that created the series for Amazon.
The Amazon project would be the first live-action depiction of Spider-Man Noir. Spider-Man Noir comics originally debuted in 2009 as part of the Marvel Noir universe. This version of the iconic superhero lives in New York City during the Great Depression.
He is bitten by a spider hidden inside a stolen artifact, which causes him to have visions of a spider god that grants him superpowers. The character has already appeared on screen in the animated series Ultimate Spider-Manwhere he was voiced by Milo Ventimiglia, while Nicolas Cage voiced the character Spider-Man in the Spider-Verse.
Sony has released several live-action Spider-Man movies in the past and is currently working with Marvel Studios on the rebooted film franchise starring Tom Holland via Columbia Pictures. Sony is also behind Spider-Man in the Spider-Versewhich won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2019. Two sequels to that film are currently in the works, with the first – Spider-Man through Spiderair – theatrical release is scheduled for June 2023.
A release window for the Spider-Man Noir series has yet to be revealed, and neither has anyone who will be cast in the production.
