Why Joe Won’t Kill In ‘You’ Season 4
Since “You” premiered in 2018, the series has followed the same premise: Joe Goldberg becomes obsessed with different women, whom he ends up murdering for one reason or another.
However, from the moment the season 4 trailer was released (which revealed details of what we’ll be able to see), it was clear that Joe won’t be the main executioner in this new installment.
Instead, it is hinted that there is a new killer who, in addition to harassing London’s elite, is also after the protagonist of “You”.
In an interview with Netflix, showrunner Sera Gamble explained that the change in the course of the story in season 4 is related to Joe’s new identity, since he is now a professor of American literature living in London:

The series co-creator also stated that “You” season 4 will see Joe Goldberg as someone who has learned from his mistakes and will try to redeem himself through his actions:
Another reason why ‘You’ Joe (who will now be named Jonathan Moore) will not be the main killer in the season is because the show will have more of a turn towards the detective genre.
In other words, in addition to ending the lives of those around him, Penn Badgley’s character must solve the mystery and discover the identity of the serial killer who is stalking him.
