Colombian artists Shakira and Karol G released the music video for their partnership “TQG”, short for “Te Quedó Grande”, on Thursday evening (02/23). The collaboration of the two big names in Latin music was a moment much awaited by the fans of the singers.
The possible partnership and even the name of the song had already been speculated earlier, in January, when Karol G wore a T-shirt that read ‘Te Quedó Grande’. Last Tuesday afternoon (02/21), the singers asked their fans to go as a surprise to Times Square, the famous intersection of two main streets in New York, United States, which has big screens, and there they showed a preview from video.
At age 32, Karol G has established herself as one of the leading female vocalists in reggaeton, a predominantly male music genre, especially in her native Colombia. The song “TQG” was released with the artist’s new album, titled “Mañana Ser Bonito”, the fourth of her career.
The music video for “TQG” features references to some classic movies like “Kill Bill” (2003) and “The Truman Show” (1998). In addition to Shakira, the album also features collaborations with other major names in Latin music such as Romeo Santos, Justin Quiles, Sech and Carla Morrison.
In the lyrics, the singers talk about their troubled public relations. As Shakira talks about one of her most talked about breakups in recent years from ex-husband Piqué, Karol G sings about her by Puerto Rican rapper Anuel AA, with whom she has been engaged for two years.
As Shakira, she sings, “Seeing you with the new one hurt me, but I’m ready for mine. I forgot what we went through, that’s what hurt you.” And the singer continues: “And life has improved for me too, because you are no longer welcome here. What your girlfriend took away from me, that doesn’t even make me angry, it makes me laugh.”
This, however, wasn’t the first song where they commented on their respective breakups. Karol G previously spoke about “celebrating life” after a breakup in “200 Cups.” And Shakira has released several firecrackers, most notably the hit “BZRP Music Sessions #53” in collaboration with the musician Bizarrap. The song is a machine gun of indirects for the ex: it talks about the betrayal of the athlete, the famous jelly can that revealed the infidelity and indirects also for his ex mother-in-law.
A curious detail of the phrase “Te quedó grande” is that, in free translation, the expression means “it does a lot of good”, or in the popular saying “a lot of sand for your truck”. Watch the clip of the new work of the Colombian divas.
