Ryan Peake, guitarist for the band, surprised by revealing his favorite bands in the segment, ranging from Megadeth to Nuclear Assault
Who listens to the most popular songs in the Nickelbacklike the ballads “How You Remind Me” It is “Photograph”, you probably have no idea that the members are fans of heavy music. Some clearer signs have already been given in heavier songs, such as “San Quentin”, from the latest album Get Rollin’ (2022), and on occasions when the group played the classic “sad but true“, of metallica. But the penchant for this type of music is far more dedicated than one would expect.
In an interview with the website Igor Mirandathe guitarist Ryan Peake was invited to reflect on the bassist’s previous statements Mike Kroeger regarding the possibility of Nickelback record an album of heavy metal and punk/hardcore covers. As Mike is a card-carrying headbanger, naturally he was more excited about the idea than his colleague, who made it clear that it was just an imagination exercise. Even so, Ryan not far behind in that sense.
“You say something like no-nonsense and it’s like, ‘We’re making a record of covers of slayer It is Meshuggah‘. Maybe a disc with Grave, huh? Yeah…but it’s cool to think about it. We all grew up listening to metal and that kind of no frills rock. Mike it’s always been on the heavier side. I like metal, but I also like melody.”
With a frame of Tom Petty at the back of the room where he gave the interview in his house, peak went on to name legendary thrash metal names that he would include on a covers album. Mention was made not only of the most famous bands, but also metallica It is megadethas well as groups that aren’t exactly popular outside the niche, like testament It is Nuclear Assault.
“I adore megadeth, I think f #da. But I remember reading an article where Dave Mustaine [vocalista e guitarrista] says he likes to write hard-to-play riffs while singing at the same time. It would be very difficult for me, maybe we could split the functions. metallica, obviously, is also great. I like things from testament. We grew up listening Anthrax. Among other things, such as Nuclear Assault. The cover of ‘Good Times Bad Times‘ [Led Zeppelin] theirs is f#da.”
Nickelback and metal is not unexpected?
Curiously, Ryan Peake believe that it would not be so surprising if the Nickelback decided to play something heavier. The guitarist reinforced that the band has songs with a heavier orientation, although he can’t exactly define them as metal.
“It’s one of those things that we can do a surprise here or there, but I don’t know if it would be unexpected. We can play a very melodic song at the same time as ‘Rockstar‘, which is almost country, and then play something heavy from the megadeth. And it would be believable. But keep your ears open, you never know.”
Mike Kroeger’s Preferences
Also to the website Igor Mirandabut in 2019, bassist Mike Kroeger talked about some of his favorite heavy bands. The brother of vocalist and guitarist Chad Kroeger highly praised the then new album by Slipknot, We Are Not Your Kindand highlighted his predilection for names like Meshuggah It is Cro-Mags.
“Every time the Slipknot releases an album, I fall in love with the new and the old. It happened again: they released We Are Not Your Kind and I’m listening to all the albums, including the old ones. I really like the MeshuggahI’m starting to hear the Cro-Mags again. I met Harley [Flanagan, baixista] when I was in New York and we became friends. Now, I’m listening to their stuff again. New York hardcore, man!”
In this ocasion, Mike he also said that he has already considered having a heavier sounding band as a side project. The problem is time, as the Nickelback consumes a large part of your schedule.
“I already considered having a heavier band. I just don’t have time to do that, but I would love to. Before the Nickelback being formed, I played in hardcore bands in Vancouver, I really enjoyed playing that sound. I’d like to do it again, but I don’t have the time. One day, maybe it will work.”
