‘André Molinero invites Denise Duran’ was born from a chance meeting between the musicians of Iguatemi; check the result
In 2019, the pianist André Molinero played Love letters in one of his presentations at Shopping Iguatemi, when a lady walked by his side humming. He invited her to sing, she resisted a little, but she sang. She was the singer Denise Duran, 86, sister of Dolores Duran. From there, a friendship emerged that would flow into the album André Molinero invites Denise Duranpublished this friday 3.
Denise sings and André plays piano on the album’s eight tracks, which includes Love lettersthe music responsible for this meeting, e Thank yousong signed by Dona Denise’s sister with Tom Jobim.
Neither the friendship nor the record happened instantly: it took the times of a pandemic. After 2019, they only met again in May of last year, when Molinero had already released his first album, made with the collaboration of supporters.
The reunion took place, once again, thanks to chance. During one of his presentations in the same mall, Molinero saw that same lady. “Once again, that woman leaned on me, it was Dona Denise singing,” recalls the pianist.
It didn’t take long for this to turn into a duo project. “I sent a message to (singer) Izzy Gordon, her daughter, saying: I have supporters, why don’t we record? She sings well and has a good story,” she says.
Lady
Dona Denise is from Rio de Janeiro, but has lived in São Paulo since the 1960s, when she came to the city to sing at the opening of Djalma’s, a house located on Praça Roosevelt. “I sang to make people dance,” she says.
Then came marriage, children and a vocal cord problem. “It was all happening at the same time and then I stopped singing,” she says. “Until my daughter asked me to record a track of hers on her CD.” Dona Denise sang on Izzy’s album and has also started making small appearances on her kids’ shows—she’s also the mother of singer Tony Gordon. “I thought it wasn’t going to work, but it did,” she adds.
In January, she and Molinero performed at Fino da Bossa, a bar in Pinheiros, and by the end of the year, they should be back on stage together at the album release show, which still has no date to be announced. . Eight clips will be released, one per month for each song on the album, which includes four Brazilian and four English songs.
The album is a mix between a tribute to the pianist’s father, who died in 2022, and a celebration of Denise’s life. “It’s as if the people upstairs had planned everything, it’s one’s curiosity interspersed with the other’s memories, all permeated with complicity and simplicity,” says Molinero.
“I never imagined doing it after so many years, I find this part of my life very beautiful,” Dona Denise celebrates.
