Is Meg White a bad drummer? Understand the controversy that has moved the web

American journalist called the musician “terrible” and was the target of reactions from Jack White, Questlove, Tom Morello and Nandi Bushell

The musical career of Meg White it was relatively short. On impulse, in 1997, she tried to play on the drums of her then-husband, the vocalist and guitarist Jack White. He liked the result and formed a band with his wife, the White Stripes, which would be hugely successful in the following years. Even with the two getting divorced in 2000, the project continued activities until 2011.

After that, no one else heard about it. meg. The drummer did not set up any other musical project. Today, she leads a quiet life living in Detroit.

Even so, his work alongside jack remains adored by fans across the planet. And, of course, there are those who don’t like it — to the point that, so many years later, his ability to play the drums was questioned on social media and provoked a debate that mobilized not only admirers, but other musicians as well.

The situation began after the American journalist Lachlan Markay publish an opinion on Twitter that ended up being removed later, due to the controversy generated: “The tragedy of White Stripes it’s how great they would have been with a minimally decent drummer. Yes, yes, I’ve heard all the ‘but it’s a carefully crafted sound, man!’ I regret that Meg White it was terrible and no band is better for having shitty percussion.”

Amid so many reactions, most of which disagreed with the opinion, the musician questlove (The Roots) manifested itself and attracted even more attention to the topic. He said:

“I try to leave out the ‘troll visions’, but this is out of line. In fact, what’s wrong with the song is people smothering it like an Instagram filter — trying to reach a perfection that doesn’t even serve the song (or the song). That’s why I follow Dilla’s path and play like a drunken slovenly amateur, because the flaw is the missing human element. Real film is far superior to the IG-filtered photo.”

karen elsonanother ex-wife of Jack White (married to him between 2005 and 2013), also came out in defense of meg. She stated: “Not only Meg White is a fantastic drummer, like jack I already said that the White Stripes would be nothing without her. To the journalist who insulted her, keep the name of my ex-husband’s ex-wife out of her mouth. (Please and thank you).”

Others defend Meg White

guitarist from Rage Against the Machine, Tom Morello also spoke up, saying:

“I’ve heard there’s been some controversy over this topic lately, so let me clear it up for the fools: Meg White is one of the greatest drummers in rock and roll history. It’s not even a debate. There are very few drummers who are instantly recognizable playing their hits. She’s on that list, bro. Does she do a lot of complicated drum fills? No, thank God. She has style, pace, personality, vigor, taste and awesomeness, plus a vibe that is untouchable by all you boring skin thumpers who think we care about all her techniques.”

And how would you say Joe Perryguitarist of aerosmith, “let the music speak”. That’s what the young lady did Nandi Bushellmulti-instrumentalist child owner of several viral on the internet, when recording a tribute to Meg White. The girl recorded a video playing “Seven Nation Army”, hit by White Stripesand declared in the caption:

Meg White is my heroine. The first day I picked up drums, my dad showed me the video for ‘Seven Nation Army‘, of White Stripes. Saw meg playing drums and I thought she was the coolest person in the world. I still do. The more I learn about music, the more I realize that songs and art are created to stir emotions deep within the soul. It doesn’t matter how fast my turns are or what rudiments I learn: if I can’t write music that moves people, then I can’t call myself an artist. meg It is Jack White created some of the best music in rock history. They moved me to the point that, at the age of 5, I wanted to play the drums — and they still move me today! My screams are for you meg! You are and always will be my role model and hero!”

Jack White’s Poem

While Meg White remains reclusive, Jack White thought it was the perfect occasion to speak out. And the frontman of White Stripes he did it in a very artistic way, when he published a poem (via the website Igor Miranda) in honor of his former musical companion.

“Born in another time,
any age but ours would be good.
100 years from now,
1000 years from now,
some other distant, different time.
one without demons, cowards and vampires out for blood,
one with the positive inspiration to promote what is good.
an empty field where no tall red poppy is cut,
where we could stay all day, every day, on the warm, subtle ground,
and knowing exactly what to say and what to play to evoke our own sounds.
and be one with others around us,
and even those who came before,
and serve us with all your love,
and pass it again one more time.
have ecstasy on ecstasy on ecstasy,
without fear, negativity or pain,
and waking up every morning and being happy to do it all over again.”

journalist portrays himself

In the face of so much controversy, Lachlan Markay decided to withdraw. The journalist not only deleted the message that turned the planet, but also apologized for the way he expressed his opinion. Since he has locked his Twitter account, the post is no longer viewable, but the content reads:

“I feel like what I wrote was overreacted and just awful in every way. So stop Meg White: I am really sorry. Serious. And for women in the music business at large, who I think are disproportionately subject to this kind of judgment, I’m sorry I fed that too. I will really try to be more considerate in the future, both here and abroad.”
