Ed Sheeran reveals the behind-the-scenes behind the lead single from ÷ (2017), also considered the biggest hit of his career

“Shape Of You”one of the singles that opened the album ÷ (2017), is considered the biggest hit of the career of Ed Sheeran. Six years after its release and 3.4 billion streams later (on Spotify alone), the British singer shared that, had he made it, the song would have featured a guest appearance by jay-z.

In an interview with the magazine Rolling Stone USAaired this Tuesday (28), Ed said that he even sent the track to the rapper, at the time, in an attempt to complete the partnership.

We were in touch and he said, ‘I don’t think the song needs a rap verse.’ And he was probably right. He has a very, very good ear. He usually gets things right. It was a very natural and respectful pass.”

One of the biggest hits of the artist’s career, the track that played the role of lead single from the disc “÷” next to “Castle on the Hill” remained for 12 weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 and for 59 weeks inside the chart. “Shape Of You” has versions in different languages, genres and styles around the world and currently accounts for the amount of 5.9 billion plays in the official music video on YouTube.

Still in the interview, Sheeran he also commented on his next career steps, the current music industry landscape in the West, and music critics in the streaming era. The artist can finally return to Brazil, four years after his last performance in the country, according to information from journalist José Norberto Flesch.
