Why the Beatles are proof that God exists, according to Rick Rubin

Producer renowned for his work with Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica, Aerosmith, Run-DMC and many others, he is in love with the band from Liverpool

Like it or not, the Beatles are to this day the most popular band in history. Although their activities ended in 1970, the group continued to be hugely successful with their works, considered timeless and very influential for the development of what is called popular music today.

Rick Rubin goes beyond. Famous in both rock and hip hop for producing artists and bands like Red Hot Chili Peppers, metallica, aerosmith, Beastie Boys, Johnny Cash, Run-DMC, Public Enemy It is Linkin Parkthe music producer understands that the existence of the group from Liverpool is proof that God exists.

In a 2013 interview with Newsweek, Rubin recalled his origins in music when he said he first heard the Beatles at the age of 4. Interestingly, the initial contact was not through an original song by the group, but through a cover: “Rock and Roll Music”, original by Chuck Berry.

The feeling was so unique that Rick still remembers what happened to him when he heard that song for the first time, in the distant year of 1967.

“I remember feeling electrified. That was the first real rock ‘n’ roll I heard in my life.”

From there, the fascination with the Beatles only grew. Even discovering so many other artists and making music history by itself, the producer still puts the band John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison It is Ringo Starr at the highest level. In this interview, he goes so far as to pose them as proof of divine existence – and explains why.

“They transcended everything. It’s something much bigger than four Liverpool boys. For me, the Beatles are proof of the existence of God. It is so good and so superior to all others.”

Rick Rubin and the Beatles

The relationship between Rick Rubin and the Beatles is so strong that, in 2022, the producer was invited by the BBC (via the website Igor Miranda) to choose the eight songs he would take to a desert island – and of course a song by Liverpool’s Fab Four was quoted right off the bat. “Across the Universe”, a track on the Let it Be album (1970), made the first place on the list.

“During my childhood, The Beatles were everywhere and all over my house. And it somehow impressed on me how beautiful this song is, on a very deep level, before I knew I was looking for what it was.”

Admiration turned into friendship, as Rubin bonded with Paul McCartney and recorded a documentary with him: McCartney 3, 2, 1 (2021), available at Star+. And guess who is the best bassist of all time in the producer’s opinion, as revealed in an interview with mojo (via NME)? Paul, of course.

“Everything I’ve ever seen related to the Beatles is about songwriting or Beatlemania. With Paul McCartney, it’s either Paul the bass player or Paul the musician, because he plays everything, but that’s only part of the story. You just think of him as one of the Beatles, but in my opinion, he’s the best of all the bass players, he’s number one.”
