Dave Grohl, former Nirvana and lead singer of Foo Fighters, wrote the song to share his first impressions of his former bandmates Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic.
Even with little uptime and only three studio albums released, the Nirvana was one of the biggest bands of the 90’s. Formed by Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl AND Christ Novoselicthe band had a resounding success with the album Nevermind, which contains hit songs like “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and “Come As You Are”.
However, the May 5, 1994 death of frontman Kurt Cobain by suicide brought Nirvana to an abrupt end. Dave Grohl, the band’s drummer, almost quit music after his friend’s death, until a brief studio project reconnected him with music. People liked this project so much that it became what we know today Foo Fighters.
- The life and death of Kurt Cobain: the rapid and brief rise of one of rock’s biggest stars
For years, Grohl has been questioned about song lyrics, with many wanting to know if they made references to Kurt Cobain and his time in Nirvana. This has always annoyed the Foo Fighters frontman, always very careful to talk about his past in public.
That’s not to say the musician has never composed a song about his years in Nirvana. Trace “Friend of a Friend”from the 2005 album In your honor, dates back to the 1990s and chronicles Grohl’s first impressions of Cobain and Novoselic. An acoustic demo was produced at the time, but the song didn’t reach audiences until a decade after Nirvana’s demise.

The song “Walk”, from the album Waste line (2011), was not inspired by Cobain, but rather by how Dave Grohl felt on May 6, 1994, the day after the Nirvana frontman’s death. Grohl doesn’t sing directly about his friend, but rather about the feeling of waking up in a world where your friend is no longer present.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, the musician commented a little more on his inspiration for the song:
Waking up that day and realizing, ‘Oh shit, he’s not here anymore. I am. I can wake up and he doesn’t. I’m making a cup of coffee and he can’t. I turn on the radio and it doesn’t, it was a big revelation for me. I just thought, ‘I don’t want anyone to feel like that morning.'”
