Lasse Wellander has toured and played guitar on some of Abba’s most famous tracks
Lasse Wellander died last Friday, 7, at the age of 70. The news was confirmed by the musician’s family in a note published on Monday, 10. He was guitarist for Abba and was present in the recordings of some of the biggest hits of the group, including the soundtrack of Mamma Mia!.
According to the statement (via NME), Wellander had been diagnosed with cancer. “It is with indescribable sadness that we announce that our dear Lasse gone. Lasse had recently fallen ill with cancer that had spread, and he died on Good Friday morning, surrounded by the people he loved.”
Abba also published tribute on social networks, with photos of a show and text: “Lasse he was a dear friend, a fun guy and a magnificent guitar player. His creativity in the studio, as well as his solid guitar work on stage, were enormous.”
“We mourn this tragic and untimely death with the kind words, sense of humor, smile and musical brilliance of the man who played such an immense role in the history of Abba. He will be missed, and he will never be forgotten.”
