The singer had declared in an interview 15 years ago that she would have liked to become the name of ‘a small square’
The mayor of Rio, Eduardo Paes (PSD), announced on Tuesday 9 that he will appoint a square in the city in honor of the singer Rita Lee, who died on the night of this Monday the 8th in Sao Paulo. About 15 years ago, the queen of rock said in an interview that she would like to name “a small square” when she dies.
“Do you think I’ll have a street name when I die?” Rita Lee asked host Fernanda Young during an interview in 2008. Fernanda then asked if that was her wish, to which the singer replied: ” Oh, I do. A little square.”
This Tuesday, the mayor of Rio took to Twitter to pay tribute to Rita Lee and said her wish will be granted. “Sad for the death of this woman who marked the life of my generation and many others!” Paes wrote. “Ah! Here in Rio we will grant her wish and she will have a plaza named after her! My condolences to her friends, family and huge legion of fans!”

The naming of streets and squares in Rio can be done by decree of the mayor or even by anyone – in this case, provided that there is a petition signed by the residents of the region and in compliance with some criteria defined by the Department of Urban Planning. The plaza to be named Rita Lee has not yet been announced.
