Couple who gave birth at Metallica’s concert decided to honor James Hetfield, lead singer of the band, in the name of their son
A couple caught attention at the show Metallica which happened in Curitiba, on May 7, when giving birth to a baby during the band’s performance. “Everyone who saw me in line with that big belly at 39 weeks joked that he was going to be born on the show. And that’s what happened (laughs),” said the mother. Joice Figueiró in an interview with Grow up.
The repercussion was such that the birth of the little one became news not only in Brazil, but also in the international media, even attracting the attention of the singer of Metallica, James Hetfield, who called the couple to congratulate them. “Goodbye to all of you because I just passed away. We just got a call from JAMES congratulating us on the birth of Luan. It’s recorded haha. I have no more words,” he wrote. figueiró on Instagram.
And to thank the affection and make the moment more special, the couple decided to honor Hetfield, but the musician asked them to keep the name they had already chosen for their son. “When we received the call from James, one of the things he told us was about keeping the name we chose for our son, because even though he already had a great story to tell, he needed to have his own name, his own journey and make his own story,” he told the Grow up.
“But we still felt like we needed to honor this whole story in some way,” he explained. The solution found was a mixture of names: the couple kept their first name, Luan, and added James then in addition to keeping the surnames Couto and Pereira.
“He was huge for calling us, he was completely sensitive and cared about us, gave us advice, told us about his experiences. It became very clear to us that the name ‘James’ should be present in the name of the luan,” finished Figueiró.

birth on the show
the tattoo artist Joice Figueiró was 39 weeks pregnant and did not want to miss the opportunity to follow the presentation of the Metallica in Curitiba. She and her husband, the barber Jaime Figueiró Netobought tickets for the band’s concert Metallica in April 2020, but the show was canceled twice due to the covid-19 pandemic.
In October 2021, the new dates were announced. Released by the medical team, joy and her husband enjoyed the show in the PCD area of the Couto Pereira Stadium. The emergency teams provided all the assistance and without time to get to the hospital, the baby came into the world in the stadium. luan was born at 11:15 pm, weighing 3,025 kilos to the sound of one of the band’s greatest classics, “Enter Sandman,” which, coincidentally, was the favorite song of the paternal grandfather who died a few years ago.
