‘Speak Now’, Taylor Swift’s third album, was the third album in the “Taylor’s Version” series of re-recorded albums – which features six brand new tracks
In the same way as Red (Taylor’s Version) (2021) and Fearless (Taylor’s Version) (2021), Taylor Swift launched the awaited Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) this Friday, the 7th. For the re-recording of the 2010 album, the singer changed the lyrics in “Better Than Revenge” – something heavily speculated by fans.
The original song featured the verse: “She’s better known for the things that she does on the mattress” (“She’s best known for the things she does on the mattress”.)
In “Better Than Revenge (Taylor’s Version)”the letter was changed to “He was a moth to the flame, she was holding the matches” (“He was a moth to the flame, she was holding the matches, wow”.)
At the time of the original release, when Swift was 21 years old, “Better Than Revenge” was largely overshadowed by her v*gabund@ shame being allegedly cheated on by her boyfriend; but at the time, the singer hadn’t given it a second thought. The re-recordings of her discography give the artist the chance to correct her mistakes and clean up some compromising lines that she immortalized in the early years of her career.
The change shows an image more aligned with the purposes of Swift as an adult, as the artist has always spoken – in the years following the release of Speak Now (2010) – about how women’s love lives, including hers, should not be judged.
The journalist Larissa Paulfrom theRolling Stone USAhad this view, in part, when he wrote in May: ““Better Than Revenge” is a pivotal point in Swift’s complicated journey to come to an understanding of intersectional feminism, particularly her place as a white woman.
Being able to acknowledge past mistakes to make more informed decisions in the future is crucial for Swift to overcome a privilege learning curve.”
taylor even talked about the criticism he received because of this part of the letter to the newspaper The Guardian, in 2014. “I was 18 when I wrote this,” he told the publication. “That’s the age you are when you think someone can really take your boyfriend away. Then you grow up and realize that no one can take someone away from you if you don’t want to leave.”
Swift announced its plans to re-record all of its material prior to the release of lover (2019), after Scooter Braun buy your old record label Big Machine and consequently lose copyright to the songs themselves. At the time, the singer said that she only found out about the agreement through the media and that she did not have the opportunity to buy the rights to her own work.
The album released this Friday still has the participation of the singer hayley williamsvocalist of Paramoreand contributions with the band fall out Boy.
At the moment, Taylor Swift is on tour with The Eras Tour, which will feature six performances in Brazil in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro in November this year. Check here what we know about the singer’s visit to Brazil
