Stranger Things Sound Effects Editor Reveals Deliciously Unexpected (and Effective) Sources for Season 4 Demo Bats

Spoiler ahead for the flight. 1 of Strange things Season 4, because Demo-Bats is ahead!

It is not a season Strange things unless The record series from Netflix introduces new monsters to make fans very happy that there are no open portals for the Upside Down to worry about in real life. Vecna - who he was created using amazing practical effects on actor Jamie Campbell Bower – it is the great evil that threatens the people of Hawkins, but as Steve learned as soon as he crossed the Watergate, the ferocious Demo-Bats are to be feared in the Upside Down. The shrieks and shrieks of the new monsters mean that horrors are on the way, and sound effects editor Angelo Palazzo explained the not-so-hideous but totally effective sources behind their sounds.

Strange things introduced the Demogorgon as the terrifying creature that can withstand even multiple people at once, the Demodogs who can make their way through a lab like a pack, and now the Demo-Bat that would have killed Steve if he didn’t. no arrival of his friends. Even then, he still lost his pound of flesh. According to the Senior Sound Effects Editor, finding the sound of bats meant embracing the kind of horror they bring to the show. Angelo Palazzo says:

It seems like every season there is a new introduction of another level of demon or creature or another part of the hive mind. So yeah, this season it’s the bats, when are these vicious swarms like piranhas, like berserkers [creatures]. They work on a level, like a full speed attack mode, at all times. It was interesting because the way they work is like soldiers in a way they activate when they sense a disturbance and then point to everyone and individually they are not that threatening, but like a swarm they are terrifying. So I had some first things for it, some first visual effects, and I was lucky enough to start putting together some ideas, I did a lot of shooting to get the wing element right. We’ve beaten a lot of everything from leather and canvas jackets to heavy gym bags and plastic items. So we built this whole library to get the movements on the wings, and then we started photographing the voice.

The swarm of Demo-Bats that nearly killed Steve and posed a serious threat to the entire group of teenagers in Upside Down made ominous noises, but who would have guessed they came from clothes, bags and plastic? Steve was more or less defending himself when one of the bats attacked him, but things changed very quickly once the entire swarm arrived. Even if Steve hadn’t been in the Upside Down, it would have been clear that these weren’t ordinary Bats; according to Angelo Palazzo, this is exactly what co-creators Matt and Ross Duffer were looking for. He said:

The Duffer Brothers didn’t just want to have a traditional bat-like thing. They wanted it to be a little bit more ferocious and stuff like that. So I tried, another publisher, Lee Gilmore, did a great job. [and] he and Craig Henighan shot him. So the end result was a hybrid of all three. The really remarkable elements: I had made many recordings of it. Bats therefore have very aggressive flapping movements, such as grinding movements in the mouth. And then I noticed that my closet door, when I slid it back and forth, had a shrill, trembling creak, like a shrill sound. I was like, ‘Oh man, that would be great.’ Craig and I were talking about it. So we recorded those sliding, creaking closet doors. So we would go through this process of manipulating those sounds and take them higher and build a library of those vocal sounds.

It’s probably pretty safe to say that most viewers didn’t think about the creaking doors when it came to the Demo-Bats attacking Steve, or when the other three teens arrived and had to join forces to keep them at. look long enough to escape. . Who would have guessed that not only did the bat sounds not come from any kind of real creature, but they came from a door that opened and closed? The sound effects editor then shared another unexpected source for a Demo-Bat sound, continuing:

It’s interesting because with sound design you can get your stuff almost anywhere. The way I see it is that I’ve been trying to think, what else makes sounds like that or what else moves like that? And then it could be something like the closet door making those knocking noises that work great. Another thing we did was register a cappuccinatore when turning it on and frothing the milk and [it] makes this shrill cry. So we did all these recordings where we were manipulating different milk and volumes, and he created these really aggressive vocal sounds. So it was combined with the closet and we probably incorporated other things that I can’t remember, but those were the core of the bats. It was so much fun doing it.

Steve would probably need a good cup of coffee after barely surviving the swarm of Upside Down Bats, but no one in this group was thinking about coffee when they got to the Watergate! Steve’s attack was undoubtedly one of the scariest, if not the scariest, sequences of the fourth season not involving Vecna, so the sounds of the cupboard and cappuccino maker were unexpected and very effective at creating the sound of the bats.

Sincerely, congratulations to Joe Keery, Natalia Dyer, Maya Hawke and Joseph Quinn (of whom Eddie is one of the featured newcomers of season 4 ) for staging his terrifying performances in the scene without being able to see or hear the Demo-Bats as viewers would with the release of Volume 1. The Bats that attacked Steve were a huge cliffhanger for the end of episode 6, so viewers can be thankful that there is yet another episode of the first volume of season 4 to reveal their fate. The group is still not safe from the Bats, with Steve and Nancy still Upside Down at the end of the flight. 1, therefore only time – and vol. 2 – will say netflix subscribers yes and how they do it

Whatever happens, the characters can only hope that these bats don’t follow the Demogorgon and Demodogs lead and escape through a door leading to Hawkins. Find out what awaits you when Volume 2 of Strange things (opens in a new tab) The fourth season will debut Friday, July 1st on Netflix. In the meantime, take a look our breakdown of Vecna’s origin story as well as some of great Strange things questions that still need to be answered . you fly. 2 follows Strange things“The usual pattern of starting to put the stories together in the last few episodes of a season, so maybe the characters start rebuilding together.” Despite all the distance from the start .
