The film, recently premiered at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival for voices of festival participants meeting in grotesque scenes features a particularly memorable scene from Stewart and the Lord of the Rings‘Viggo Mortensen, with whom he apparently surprised the director.
When Gossipify spoke to legendary director David Cronenberg, known for ’80s sci-fi horror movies like To fly Yes videodrome She shared what it was like to work with Kristen Stewart. In her words:
Kristen really surprised me, because she created a character with the dialogues I wrote and the character description I wrote, but the actors have to bring it to life and it’s a great act of creativity. She immediately understood the way she spoke, the level of her voice, the speed of her dialogue. I’ve described this character as some kind of shy, bureaucratic rat and she started with that, but obviously the character turns out to be quite obsessive, Machiavellian, ambitious and quite devious indeed. So there is an evolution and this bureaucratic rat-like thing becomes a kind of disguise for someone who is actually much more powerful. She then she delivered all those things right away. You know, I didn’t have to do a lot of directing. I have to tell you. And, that long scene with Viggo in his office, he was alone, it shocked everyone. I think it surprised her and Viggo too, but it was just beautiful. It was like, first take. That was all. It was fantastic.
In crimes of the futureKristen Stewart is among a starred cast that also includes Léa Seydoux of the latest Bond movies. Stewart plays a different character than we have seen an actress named Timlin, who becomes fascinated by Viggo Mortensen’s Saul and seduces him later in the film. It’s a long streak of victories you wouldn’t think Mortensen and Stewart would get away with right away. Actor Scott Speedman also signed his work in the scene. As he told Gossipify:
It was my first day. And I got there early, and I was watching them do this scene. And I had no idea because on the page, you know, her vocal intonations and all, it wasn’t necessarily there. And seeing them, I thought, wow, I better stop here. Because they really go there. And delivering A + performance was madness. He was wild.
Kristen Stewart had the opportunity to do this working with David Cronenberg after his Dusk co-star Robert Pattinson introduced him to her after being cast in her 2012 film Cosmopolis. As Cronenberg also said, Stewart really brought her character to life through her portrayal of her in a way she didn’t necessarily expect:
I mean, I put all I could to write the dialogue, but it’s still inert until it’s spoken and there’s a lot of room for creativity.

After debuting in Cannes with a six-minute standing ovation, the film premiered in limited theaters over the weekend and will be released nationally this weekend.
