The influential guitarist and songwriter leaves a remarkable legacy in rock history
Guitarist, songwriter and singer Robbie Robertsonwho led the Canadian-American group The band to rock stardom in the 70s, passed away this Wednesday, aged 9, aged 80.
According to a post on the musician’s official profile, Robertson he was surrounded by his family in Los Angeles at the time of his death. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for donations to build a new cultural center on the Grand River Six Nations Reservation, located in Ontario, Canada.
Robertson, born in Toronto on July 5, 1943, has always had a deep connection to his Indigenous roots. He grew up visiting reservations and, in his solo career, has explored Native American themes in his music.
Known for classics like Weight AND The night they took down old DixieThe story of Robertson with The band was immortalized in the 2019 documentary We were once brothers. He began his musical career at the age of 16, joining the hawks. He later served as the backing band for Bob Dylan during their first tour. In 1968, Bob and Robbie signed with Capitol Records and, under the name The bandhas released iconic albums that have influenced generations of musicians.
However, despite their success, problems with substance abuse led to creative challenges in 1970. Robertson ultimately decided to end the band’s activities. Farewell was held with a show in 1976 entitled THE Last waltzwhich was filmed by Scorsese. The musician and director collaborate on a number of projects, including Bull indomitable, You Infiltrate AND OR Wolf from Wall Street. The latest partnership can be seen at Flower Moon Assassina film by Scorsese whose release is scheduled for October of this year.
After The band, Robertson embarked on a solo career, delved into acting and screenwriting, and maintained a long creative relationship with Scorsese. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. In his last interview, he revealed that he was working on a second memoir, a sequel to Testimony 2016, which concluded with his description of the show THE Last waltz.
