The project was announced by one of the singer’s sons, producer João Marcello Bôscoli
The presentation of the singer Elis Regina (1945-1982) at the Montreux Festival in Switzerland in 1979 is about to come out with a restored image. The news was announced by the singer’s eldest son, producer João Marcello Bôscoli, in a live broadcast on Instagram on the night of Monday 28 August. According to Bôscoli, the restoration should start “in the next few weeks”.
According to Bôscoli, the images, recorded at the time by the festival’s production and broadcast in Brazil by broadcasters such as Bandeirantes and Cultura, were negotiated with the company that currently owns the festival’s collection. The negotiation took place through the vice president of TV Cultura, Carlito Camargo.
In this show, Elis sang songs that were already hits with her voice, such as Madeleine, Upa, little guy AND March watersshowed a new song by Gilberto Gil, sapling, and introduced the world to the composer Fátima Guedes, of whom he sang Eleven tapes.
The performance has always generated controversy regarding the singer’s performance. Adored by fans, she displeased Elis at the time.
The singer had two full shows on the same day: one in the afternoon and the other in the evening. In the second performance, recorded on video, Elis seems to have a tired voice. Elis was still bothered by the intense heat of the theater where the show was being held. The makeup she wore on hers was stained with sweat and she was drooling at her eyes.
At the time Elis even asked the Warner label not to release the audio recording, but the promise was broken after the singer’s death and a disc with moments from the show was released – which years later won editions on CD.
“It’s a masterful record as a record, but for me it’s strange. It’s not something I like”, said Bôscoli watching the live. Although he doesn’t like the recording, João, realizing the importance of the album, wants to remaster this album as well. This, however, still depends on the permissions of the people involved in the registration.
The producer also recounted the backstage duet Elis performed with musician Hermeto Pascoal that same day at the Montreux Festival. According to Bôscoli, Elis warned the musician that her voice was tired and told him in which keys she could sing. Also according to Elide’s son, Pascoal did not respect Elide’s wish. Together they sang three songs.
“Hermeto, free, unique, a force of nature, ignored this request. Some international musicians who were there understood the situation and went to accommodate him. This will never be told, of course,” said Bôscoli. The producer also claimed that Elis would complain about the situation upon her return to Brazil.
Bôscoli also announced that he is negotiating with a Japanese television station for the diffusion of images of the show that Elis performed there, a few days after his performance in Montreux. In this show, according to him, the singer’s performance is superior to that presented in Switzerland.
The producer’s intention, in addition to putting the images on YouTube, is to host them on some video platform. This, however, still depends on the negotiations.
