Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Corinne Bailey Rae releases her highly anticipated new album, Black rainbows on all digital platforms across Thirty tigers.
To coincide with the release of the album, a book, REFLECTIONS/REFRACTIONS ON THE STONY ISLAND ARTS BANKPhoto by Koto Bolofois also available.
Covering a wide variety of topics, the subjects of Black rainbows are inspired by encounters with the objects of Stony Island Arts Banka curated collection of Black archives that includes books, sculptures, records, furniture, and problematic objects from America’s past.
From the churches carved in stone of Ethiopia to the journeys of black pioneers westward from Miss New York Transit (1957) to what the sunset looks like from the window Harriet Jacobs, Black rainbows explores black femininity, magic, inner and outer space, time collapse, ancestors, and music as a vehicle for transcendence.
Inspired by his transcendent experience in Stony Island Arts Bank In Chicago, the project marks a new direction for the artist. She notes: “When I walked through those doors I knew my life had changed forever.”
The singles The transportation queen of New York AND Peach velvet sky were released to critical acclaim ahead of the album. As for the juxtaposition of the songs, Bailey Rae explains: “The joyful effervescence of New York City girl group Transit Queen – with handclaps and joyous vocals – contrasts with the piano ballad simplicity of Peach Velvet Sky.”
