Understand Rick Astley’s lawsuit against Yung Gravy
In January 2023, Astley sued Gravy when alleging how the rapper had used his vocals without authorization in “Betty (Get Money).”
According to the indictment, the rapper and co-producers were authorized to replicate the instrumental of “Never Gonna Give You Up” and interpolate the chorus melody into the chorus of “Betty (Get Money).” However, they were not allowed to do this directly from the song.
The legal team of Astley claimed how Yung Gravy he brought Nick Seeleyresponsible for co-producing the song, to imitate the voice of Astley for “Betty.” As proof, they used a video published on Instagram, in which Seeley reportedly discussed how he wanted his vocals to “sound identical” to the original track.
A license to use the underlying original musical composition does not authorize the theft of the artist’s voice in the original recording. Instead, they resorted to stealing the voice of the Mr Astley without license and without agreement.
