Furthermore, vinyl records outsold CDs for the first time in 36 years in 2023
A few months after surpassing sales of CDs after 36 years, the sale of vinyl records, which has returned to fashion in recent years, increased 15% in the first nine months of 2023, according to data collected by BPI (via MusicWeek).
As the company reported, 3,952,262 vinyl LPs were sold from January to December. This number represents an increase of approximately 13.2% compared to 2022. In the three months of the third quarter, 1,237,620 records were sold (15.1% higher than the previous year).
Several artists also contributed to the increase in the popularity of vinyl records by releasing albums in this format. Names like Lana Del Rey, Taylor Swift, Blur It is Kylie Minogue did this in 2023. The best-selling vinyl so far is Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvdin Del Reywith 33,568 copies sold.
Second comes Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)in Taylor Swift, with 29,649 sales (but was the best-selling vinyl release of the third quarter). The podium closes with The Ballad of Darrenof Blur, with 26,894 copies. In fourth place is Voltagein Kylie Minoguewith 19,160 copies sold.
It is worth highlighting how the number of vinyl record sales is expected to increase even further with the sexta-feira Negra, scheduled to take place on November 24th. On this date, artists such as Joni Mitchell, Prince, The Doors, Post Malone and around 90 other artists will release limited vinyl editions.
