Guilherme Arantes: remembering the songs, the career and the relationship of the “recognized outsider” with television

Guilherme Arantessinger and songwriter, who has had success with song lyrics such as Full of charm, Tomorrow, Planeta Água AND One day, a goodbyerecently drew attention when he vented about his relationship with TV shows, recalling a “toxic question” he heard about Faustão in the band.

“People ask me why I avoid doing television. It’s just that I understand that my image can harm the television audience, it can harm me. Now it has become very complicated, with the interactivity and the invasive and scientific voyeurism of talk shows .And I know that television shows are living on a razor’s edge, desperately fighting for an audience,” he said.

According to Guilherme Arantes, the question that worried him was asked in April 2022, when presenter Anne Lottermann asked her if she “missed her hair and her youth”, which he considered an “innocent and stupid question”. Arantes responded by mentioning her cerebral content (from 37m01s in the video below).

Guilherme Arantes, the “recognized outsider”

In the 1980s, even though he was part of established record labels and his compositions were recognized, he had a certain insecurity: “A supposed outsider, I always realized that success was fragile, especially mine, not aligned with the movements and to pathos, not a Carioca from the south, nor a guitarist, nor a rocker, or, as Belchior said, without important relatives and coming from the countryside.”

“My disdain for criticism also largely comes from my disdain for the media. I’ve never been a good diplomat, socially I’m a bit of a wild animal,” he continued.

Even in this scenario, Guilherme Arantes’ relationship with television is long-standing, having been a frequent presence for many decades, since the time of Chacrinha.

“I was ridiculed by my friends when I started doing talk shows, I became a dubious figure even for my wife. Her biggest idol was Beto Guedes. He had a problem with my career,” he said in an interview with Estadao.

Guilherme Arantes and success in today’s music

Also at Estadaoin 2014, he reflected on music today: “Commercial success is no longer possible. Until the 1970s, we had an artistic, urban and university elite, creating a movement that reached all strata. Today, communities in the suburbs have the their studies, their rappers, the pagodas and country music. They have created their own languages. They no longer accept the upper-middle and educated class dictating their fashion, telling them what they should feel.”

“The issue is social. Guilherme Arantes, who was able to go to the Silvio Santos program, who was on the cover of Contigo magazine and who had posters in beauty salons, is no longer possible,” he continued.
