Box office | “Five Nights at Freddy’s” maintains leadership in the United States

The bloodless horror “Five Nights at Freddy’s” maintained its lead at the US box office for the second week in a row, helped by the US actors’ strike.

Originally, the weekend was going to feature the premiere of “Dune: Part Two,” but a ban on promotion by the actors due to the strike meant the release was pushed back to 2024. Legendary Pictures, owner of the franchise “Dune “, understands that the cast, which includes Zendaya and Timothée Chalamet, is essential to promote its release.

Without major rivals, “Five Nights at Freddy’s” grossed $19.4 million, marking a frightening 76% drop from its opening week, thanks to the film’s simultaneous availability on the Peacock platform. Even so, the video game adaptation surpassed the $100 million mark in less than 10 days.

Abroad, where it is only available in theaters, the film grossed an impressive $35.6 million, accumulating $217.1 million overall, a considerable return for a modestly budgeted production: it “only” cost 20 million dollars. With this, “Five Nights at Freddy’s” became the second horror title of 2023 to surpass $200 million, following “The Nun 2,” which accumulated $265.9 million.

More box office highlights

Revenue from the “Taylor Swift: Eras Tour” also continues to impress. In 2nd place, with more than $13 million accumulated this weekend, the most-watched documentary of all time has already earned $165 million in North America and $231 million worldwide.

In No. 3, Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” grossed $7 million for a domestic gross of $52.3 million after three weekends. The period drama, which represents a big gamble for the awards season, stands at $119 million worldwide, but its cost was $200 million (excluding P&A expenses – advertising).

Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla Presley biopic “Priscilla” placed 4th with $5.1 million after expanding from its limited release to the wider theatrical circuit across the country. Presented in 1,344 theaters, much fewer than the other titles on the bill, the production exceeded industry expectations and was seen above all by a young, female audience. Despite the release in the United States, the production of the independent studio A24 will still take two months to arrive in Brazil, on January 4th.

Finishing in the Top 5 in North America, Mexican comedy-drama “Radical,” starring and produced by Eugenio Derbez (“We Don’t Accept Returns”), had a $2.7 million debut in just 419 theaters. “Radical” arrived in the United States after being a box office success in Mexico, where it became one of the most successful films of the post-pandemic era, with more than $5 million in ticket sales locally, according to producers . A premiere in Brazil is not planned.

Failures of the week

The premiere of “What Happens After,” marking Meg Ryan’s (“The Tune of Love”) return to romantic comedies, was one of the week’s failures. Failing to attract a large audience, the film about the unexpected meeting of a pair of former lovers at an airport opened in 9th place with revenues of $1.5 million in 1,492 theaters. Furthermore, the production has no intention of reaching Brazilian cinemas.

Another new release fared even worse, the psychological thriller “A Filha do Rei do Pântano”, already screened in Brazil. The thriller starring Daisy Ridley (“Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”), playing a kidnapper’s daughter who escapes prison, opened at No. 12 with a disappointing $820,000 in 1,055 locations.
