“So young and consumed”: Amy Lee’s reflections on Evanescence’s Fallen

Singer feels grateful for the repercussion of the most popular work of her career, with more than 17 million copies sold

The rock scene was taken by storm by Evanescence in 2003, when their debut album, Fallen, was released. In the wake of hits like “Bring Me to Life”, “My Immortal” and “Going Under”, the work had more than 17 million copies sold across the planet — it is estimated that it is the 6th most sold album of the 21st century.

Two decades have passed and Amy Lee remains proud of her achievements. In an interview with TMDQAthe singer and songwriter — who was in Brazil with Evanescence last October — shared some reflections on the period that spawned his best-selling album.

Initially, when asked about what it was like revisiting the songs of Fallen on the current tour celebrating the album’s 20th anniversary and for a deluxe re-release with extra material, to be made available on November 17th, she defined it as:

“Fun, enlightening, and yes, a little difficult at times.”

Then, the singer explained her thoughts:

Fallen It’s a huge part of my life and has been a part of our live show forever, always growing and at the same time bringing me back home. Really, revisiting old recordings, old cassette tapes, photos, all of it brought back memories and feelings that I had forgotten.”

Sincerely, Lee admitted that even though she was so young at the time — she was 21 years old when the album came out — she was very “consumed” by all the work involved.

“I was so young and so consumed! I still look back and feel most of all grateful to have been given the extraordinary chance to do what I love most and feel the love come back to me from every corner of the world. I couldn’t ask for more in terms of where we are today after everything this band has been through.”

Evanescence and Amy Lee’s pride

In a 2018 interview with RTBF (via Blabbermouth), Amy Lee reflected on all the success achieved by the Evanescence. In addition to Fallen, the band achieved good repercussion with the following album, The Open Door — it is estimated that the work has sold more than 5 million copies worldwide.

“I feel proud when I look back. I look back and see my face, especially in an old interview or at a show on the Fallen, and I see myself as a child. I had lived outside my parents’ house for about four years. Then I see it and think, ‘Wow, that was an incredibly crazy thing to happen’.”

Another point highlighted by Lee at the time was the “juggling” to deal with fame at such a young age. Furthermore, he needed to keep his band together — something that was not possible, since all the members at the time of Fallen they ended up leaving.

“I was adjusting emotionally, trying to keep the band together and all the craziness that goes with that.”
