Gal Costa: journalist presents petition for transfer of body from SP to Rio; the family searches for the “right time”

Rita Moraes, creator of the petition, spoke to ‘Estadão’ and explained the motivation for the request; a family member says: ‘I prefer to respect Gal and Gabriel, and do it at the right time’

A petition, created by the journalist Rita Moraesof whom he was a friend Gal Costa, calls for the singer’s body to be exhumed and taken from Sao Paulo to Rio de Janeiro, where she should be buried next to her mother, Mariah Costa Penna. According to the author of the request, presented on Friday the 10th, this was the artist’s wish. At the time of this publication the petition has 44 signatures.

Gal is currently buried in the Ordem Terceira do Carmo cemetery, a place chosen by her widow Wilma Petrilloaccused of defrauding his wife.

“What motivated me [a criar a petição] it was the lack of respect for the wishes of Gal, who expressed to friends and relatives her desire to be buried in the tomb she had built for Dona Mariah,” writes Rita Estadao.

The text of the petition is addressed to the Attorney General of Justice of the State of São Paulo: “Outraged by the nebulous way in which the burial of his body took place, I respectfully ask Your Excellency to order the establishment of a specific procedure so that the body of the late singer be exhumed to be transferred to the tomb purchased by the famous singer and where her mother, Mariah Costa Penna, is buried, in the São João Batista cemetery, in Rio de Janeiro”.

Support from friends and family

For the transfer to take place, judicial proceedings and authorization for exhumation by a family member are necessary. The report contacted a relative of Gal to find out his opinion on the topic of the petition.

“I prefer to respect Gal and Gabriel, and do it at the right time,” said the close family member, who did not want to be identified. “People and fans can do it [a petição], we live in a democracy. I have nothing against anyone. I only ask for respect for Gal’s memory.”

“I never spoke to Gal about this topic, but her friends and family told me that this conversation existed. I’m always supportive of what she wanted,” he stressed.

Exhumation

The text of the petition provides for exhumation, a necessary procedure for the transfer, but Rita says she does not want to deal with the autopsy of Gal Costa’s body. The topic arose after the magazine Piauí publish an article in which he exposes the accusations of coup d’état, threats and moral harassment against Wilma Petrillo. At the time of the artist’s death in 2022, the cause of her death was not revealed.

According to the journal article, the death certificate cites two presumed causes: acute myocardial infarction and malignant tumor of the skull and neck. Gal Costa’s body was not subjected to an autopsy.
