Manu Gavassi resonates with videos that criticize the current music industry

Manu Gavassi published a short film on YouTube and social media, titled “Artistic Career Protection Program”, which quickly went viral and attracted comments from several celebrities. Written, directed and performed in double doses by the artist, the production is a satire on artistic career consultancy agencies.

The video shows Manu expressing his desire to return to music, at which point he is faced with options to advance his career, including “controversial options”, such as breaking up and cheating, which reflect the formula required by the music industry. If she doesn’t want to follow the suggestions, she has to admit that she is set up to fail. In another phase, the attendant (also played) offers her thematic concepts to frame her next launch. And this time the alternative to not wanting to integrate is to advertise on Instagram.

The video culminates with a powerful scene: Manu then decides to give up her career, but is forced back into the chair and forced to submit. The program participant then highlights how the sensitivity and time required by the creative process of some artists are incompatible with current standards of success. This scene, in particular, seems to have had a strong resonance among the artists who watched the video.

Repercussion

Singers such as Anitta, Ludmilla, Priscilla Alcântara and Mariana Xavier commented that they saw themselves reflected in the video. Anitta, for example, commented ironically how often she found herself in similar situations described in the short: “Raise your hand if you too have been in this little room 10 times this year,” she recalled.

Priscilla, who recently transitioned from gospel to pop, was moved by the video, describing her reaction as “Crying. Amazing.” Actress Mariana Xavier reflected on the pressures of the industry, saying, “I’ve been thinking about this a lot. How the current model of ‘success,’ which demands massive productivity and presence from us, pushes us in the opposite direction of the essence that makes us artists.”

Giulia (ex B), who changed her stage name, also praised: “I adore you. It’s fantastic. I’ve seen it at least 10 times”.

But the initiative has also faced criticism. Journalist Carol Prado, from the Globo group, called Gavasi’s criticism “flat as a saucer” and also criticized the position of mainstream artists who criticize the industry while benefiting from it.

New project

The video brings attention to Manu as he begins a new project, which will include three songs and four short films. “Artistic Career Protection Program” is only the first short film of the new phase.

An Instagram post showed that the upcoming shorts will feature cameos from actresses Leticia Colin and Pathy de Jesus. Additionally, they will show Manu in different situations in the city of Sao Paulo, including scenes where he appears singing in a bar and in a tense meeting.
