Previews | Mamonas Assassin’s movie hits theaters

Two domestic films were treated as blockbusters this Thursday (12/28) after successive failures of American cinema in the country. “Mamonas Assassinas – O Filme” and “Minha Irmã e Eu” arrive in a thousand theaters on the national circuit. Additionally, previews include a British horror and a French drama. Find out the details.

KILLER MAMONAS – THE FILM

The biopic tells the story of Guarulhos’ band, which became a national phenomenon in the mid-90s. It follows the life of Mamonas before their fame, especially Dinho, the difficulties at the beginning of their career and shows how a failed progressive rock The group, called Utopia, reinvents itself as a comedy group and becomes a phenomenon. Mamonas Assassinas ended up becoming one of Brazil’s most beloved bands with their infectious joy, but their trajectory was short, cut short by a tragic end – with all its members dying in a plane crash while returning from a show, March 2, 1996. However, those who do not know the band may have difficulty understanding the plot, which is presented episodically, without a coherent narrative development.

This may be due to the fact that the original project was conceived by Carlos Lombardi – author of soap operas such as “Uga Uga” (2000) and Kubanacan (2004) – and written by journalist Carlos Amorim as a miniseries for Record TV. The project ended up being reconfigured for the big screen, directed by Edson Spinello, former director of the soaps “Apocalypse” (2017) and “Rei Davi” (2012), and making his film debut. The impression, however, is that there are “chapters” missing in the story. The record should show the version with all episodes in 2024.

The positive aspect of the production is the energy of the cast, made up of actors unknown to the general public, but with great experience in musicals, who offer better performances than the film itself. Ruy Brissac, who plays the singer Dinho, takes up the role he played on the stage in “Mamonas, the musical”, which earned him the Bibi Ferreira Award as New Actor. Adriano Tunes, who plays bassist Samuel Reoli, is a comedian and has worked on the program “Dedé eo Comando Maluco”, on SBT, as well as musicals such as that of presenter Hebe Camargo. Robson Lima, who plays keyboard player Júlio Rasec, is also a theater actor and worked on “Yank – The Musical”. Rhener Freitas, who plays bassist Sérgio Reoli, worked on the Disney Channel series “Bia.”

Guitarist Bento was almost noticed by singer and host Yudi Tamashiro, who was eventually replaced by Alberto Hinomoto, the real character’s nephew. Alberto, who was 17 years old during production, toured with the same guitar that belonged to his uncle, which he used in the band’s shows. The filming marks his screen debut.

Another name who debuts as an actress in the production is that of the famous TikToker Fernanda “Fefe” Schneider, interpreter of Valéria Zoppello, Dinho’s girlfriend, who lost her partner when she was just 24 years old. Fernanda is a phenomenon on TikTok and has more than 16 million followers on the platform. To top it off, Dinho’s parents are played by Guta Ruiz, who was in the film “Gostosas, Lindas and Sexies”, and Jarbas Homem de Mello, husband of Cláudia Raia and actor in “Roque Santeiro – The Musical”.

MY SISTER AND I

Ingrid Guimarães and Tatá Werneck play two sisters who hate each other but still love each other in their new cinematic meeting. Long-time friends, the two have already shared the screen in “De Pernas pro Ar 2” (2012), “Loucas para Casar” (2015) and “OCD: Transtornada Obsessiva Compulsiva” (2017). This time they play sisters Mirian (Ingrid) and Mirelly (Tatá), born in Rio Verde, Goiás, but who followed opposite paths in life. Mirian has never left her city and has become accustomed to the quiet routine of the countryside. Mirelly left early for Rio de Janeiro and her whole family follows her success on social media, always surrounded by famous friends.

What the family doesn’t know is that it’s all fake. In fact, she lives with late bills and spends a lot of time doing odd jobs and taking care of the pets of celebrities, such as the singer IZA and the acting couple Lázaro Ramos and Taís Araújo (who play themselves in the production), who she remembers are your friends. Believing the lie, Mirian decides that her mother (Arlete Salles) will live with her rich sister. The situation generates a huge argument and the chaos culminates in the disappearance of her mother, and from then on they must put aside their differences and unite to look for her.

“My Sister and I” is the third film by director Susana Garcia that has “mine” in the title, after “Minha Vida em Marte” and the blockbuster “Minha Mãe é uma Peça 3”. Exploring the dynamic of opposites of sisters, the popular comedy is one of the funniest to hit theaters in 2023.

THE LORD OF CHAOS

The British folk horror follows Rebecca Holland, played by Tuppence Middleton (“Shadows of War”), a Christian preacher who moves to the small town of Burrow with her daughter Grace and is greeted with curiosity by the local community, whose beliefs she still holds paganism. traditions. . One such tradition is an agricultural festival, which ends up casting Grace as the “Harvest Angel”. However, the girl mysteriously disappears during the event, leading the protagonist on a harrowing quest, which will reveal dark secrets about the place and its leader.

The film’s atmosphere is strengthened by exceptional performances, particularly that of Ralph Ineson (“The Witch”), who plays the charismatic and menacing leader of the community. The protagonist’s discoveries about the nature of the city and the mysterious festival provide twists to the plot, maintaining the suspense.

Written by Tom Deville (from “The Curse of the Woods”) and directed by William Brent Bell (from “Orphan 2: Inception”), the film follows some of the Pagan rural horror tropes established in the classic “The Wicker Man” (1973 ), but also offers surprises and evocative cinematography, which emphasizes the natural beauty of the rural environment, capable of presenting itself in an idyllic and disturbing way at the same time.

STOP YOUR LIES

Film adaptation of Philippe Besson’s autobiographical novel, the drama centers on Stéphane Belcourt (played by Guillaume de Tonquédec, in “What’s the Baby’s Name”), a famous author who returns, after 35 years, to his hometown in the French region of Cognac. The reason for his return is an invitation to an event, but his true intentions are to rediscover his romantic past, and upon arrival he forms a bond with Lucas (Victor Belmondo, nephew of the iconic Jean-Paul Belmondo), son of the his lost first love.

The narrative alternates between the present and flashbacks of young Stéphane, an awkward high school student, played by Jérémy Gillet, and his relationship with Thomas Andrieu (Julien De Saint Jean), a popular student. The story explores the intensity of first love and the repercussions of a secret, shameful romance.

Presented through two parallel narratives – that of Stéphane as an adult, a local Cognac celebrity, and that of himself as a young man in 1984 – the film investigates the ramifications of the protagonist’s fascination with another young man, at times bordering on sentimentality. The work bears similarities to François Ozon’s “Summer ’85,” both adaptations of novels dealing with gay male romance on the eve of the AIDS crisis, and both featuring a lover who rides a motorcycle. The pain of wasted time and lost love is a familiar theme in queer cinema, but Olivier Peyon’s film (“The Uruguayan Son”) also offers a touching reflection on teenage love.
