Lil Nas X caused a stir with the release of the first music video of his new era, “J Christ.” The rap with its danceable beat and infectious chorus earned a video full of biblical references. It begins with the entrance of celebrity lookalikes, such as former President Obama, Oprah Winfrey and singers Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, Kanye West and Mariah Carey, into Paradise (where Michael Jackson still dances) and continues by showing the rapper as a God sensual in a basketball duel against the devil, as well as a celestial cheerleader, crucified Jesus Christ and Moses, among elements of gay iconography and a scenario of an apocalyptic flood, caused by global warming.
The use of religious elements aroused the ire of some of the network, which accused the rapper of disrespecting Christianity. An American pastor even prayed for him to die. And several posts appear to seriously defend his crucifixion. However, many people also liked the song, who enjoyed seeing the rapper arouse rejection from conservative audiences, the likes of which hadn’t been seen since Marilyn Manson’s emergence as the “antichrist.”
The artist even provoked the public before the launch. In November, he appeared singing gospel and asking if fans would mind if he entered his “Christian phase,” after releasing videos featuring the devil, such as the equally controversial “Montero (Call Me By Your Name).”
When Lil Nas X debuted “Montero” in 2021, his use of religion as a visual backdrop also divided opinion. When they were invited to perform at that year’s BET Awards, members of her team told Rolling Stone magazine that they were asked to confirm that he was not a “satanist or devil worshipper.”
“J Christ” is part of the rapper’s upcoming new album, which has no title or release date yet. But in two weeks (January 27), he will release a documentary on HBO Max about his latest tour.
