Why Adele takes so long to release new albums

Since reaching stardom at 21, the English singer has released few works and with a long gap between them

Each album release by Adele It’s its own event. Not only because she is a music giant, but also because of her absence: the English singer makes few albums available, with considerable gaps between works.

The artist’s recording debut, 19took place in 2008. Until the second work didn’t take so long to arrive — 21released in 2011 —, but the breaks for 25 (2015) and 30 (2021) proved to be longer.

Is there a reason for this? According to the artist, yes. And it is the noblest possible.

In a statement during the awards ceremony Women in Entertainmentof The Hollywood Reporter (via NME), Adele revealed that having become pregnant with his child, Angeloduring the album cycle 21 It represented something that defined his career. At the time, she was around 24 years old and was already a global star, but she chose to devote as much of her attention as possible to the boy.

Initially, she reflected on how people might end up thinking the long gaps between albums would be calculated. According to the singer, they are not.

“Sometimes I wonder if people think I’m calculating when I disappear for years on end, that I’m elusive and that I believe less is more, or something like that. But the real reason I’ve only released four albums to date is my son.”

Next, Adele pointed out that many do not easily come to the conclusion that her son was born precisely during the period in which she achieved stardom at 21 — her previous work, 19, did not have the same impact.

“I don’t think many people know that. People know I have a son, but they don’t know he’s 11 years old. So if you do the math, that means at the height of 21, I got pregnant.”

Professional decision

As highlighted, Adele prioritized raising her son over maintaining her musical career with several commitments. The artist states that many considered it “professional suicide”, but that she was at peace with the decision.

“That’s when I decided to reject the issue of ‘lack of success’, the idea that you need to be constantly relevant to be successful. And that maybe, just maybe, I could be a success on and off the stage. And you’ll never guess: I got away with all these problems!”

There are no doubts. Although 21 remains his best-selling album (31 million copies sold across the planet), the following works also reached satisfactory numbers: 25 reached the mark of 23 million units, while 30 reached 5.5 million — in a period where very few artists reach such a mark.

Another decision made by Adele in this regard is not to tour. She chooses to perform only in the season format as a resident. In 2023, she performed 54 shows, all in the same location: The Colosseum at Caesars Palacein Las Vegas, in the United States. In 2022, he performed another 14 performances in the same location, in addition to two in Hyde Park and one in O2 Arenaboth in Londonin England.
