Grammys: Phoebe Bridgers criticizes former Academy president accused of sexual violence

“I hope you rot”, declared the singer and member of Boygenius during a conversation with the press at this Sunday’s ceremony (4)

Phoebe Bridgers harshly criticized the former president of Recording Academy during a meeting with the press this Sunday (4) during the 66th award ceremony of the Grammy. The singer recalled the accusations of sexual violence against Neil Portnow and said he hopes it “rots.”

The criticism came in response to a question from Rolling Stone US Bridgers and her bandmates Boygenius, Julien Baker It is Lucy Dacus, about how women would be changing the future of music. Phoebe then recalled a statement by Neil Portnow, former president of the Academy, who in 2018 stated that women should “stand up” for more representation, after an edition with only male winners in the main categories.

“I have something to say about women,” Bridgers responded in the Grammy press room. “Former Recording Academy President Neil Portnow has said that if women want to be nominated and win at the Grammys, they need to ‘stand up.’ He is also being accused of sexual violence. To him I would like to say: I I know you’re not dead yet, but when you are, I hope you rot.”

Dacus, Bridgers’ Boygenius bandmate, reinforced the message: “I think this is very rock and roll.”

In June 2018, Neil Portnow was accused of sexual harassment by an anonymous woman, who filed complaints that he had drugged her and then raped her in a New York hotel. According to the indictment, the Academy “aided and stifle Portnow’s conduct to protect their own reputations and silence the accuser and other women in the music industry who stood up and chose to speak out.”
