Skrillex’s motivating message to young artists after winning Grammy

Influential DJ and multi-instrumentalist took advantage of a prominent moment to give advice instead of limiting himself to just saying thank you

Skrillex has established itself as one of the most influential names in electronic music. The American DJ, multi-instrumentalist and producer began his career in rock, more specifically in the post-hardcore band From First to Lastbefore migrating to EDM (electronic dance music) and became a reference in dubstep, a more obscure subgenre with syncopated beats.

Although there are more popular DJs with more significant sales numbers, Skrillex built an impactful legacy to the point of being recognized with nine trophies Grammy, the most important award in music. The most recent was achieved in the most recent edition, corresponding to the year 2024.

On that occasion, the song “Rumble”, recorded in partnership with Fred Again It is Flowdan and released on the album Quest for Fire (2023), won the category Best Dance/Electronic Recording. The album as a whole was also nominated for Best Dance/Electronic Albumbut did not win.

When he went up on stage to receive the trophy for “Rumble”, Skrillex surprised with a brief speech, but relevant for young artists. Instead of restricting yourself to thanking partners, friends and family, the DJ left a reflection on the search for success. Initially, he stated:

“For anyone who wants to make music, for young artists, the best advice I’ve ever received is that success is something you attract, not something you chase or try to catch.”

Then, the artist gave a tip that can be useful for anyone, but is even more powerful among musicians. According to him, it is necessary to “listen to each other” in today’s times.

“The other thing I want to say, to all the young people… I know the world is crazy right now, but I really hope we can start to really listen to each other. And about everyone on the other side or anyone with a different perspective, may we understand that they are not enemies. I really hope we can start listening to each other and talking.”

Finally, he thanked Fred Again It is Flowdan — the latter, defined by him as one of his greatest inspirations in music. And he referenced the advice again.

“It’s amazing to have a Grammy with these guys, my best friends making music we love, not trying to make it big, not trying to do anything other than move the music forward.”

Skrillex’s Grammy Awards

In all, Skrillex won nine awards Grammy. In 2012, one of his most prominent years, he was nominated for five categories — including New Artist, one of the main ones. He ended up not winning this one, but he took home three: Best Non-Classical Remix (for “Movie theater”, remix of Benny Benassi), Best Dance/Electronic Album (by Scary Monstersand Nice Sprites) and Best Dance Recording (for the title track of Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites).

In 2013, he was nominated for three categories and won them all — the same ones from which he emerged victorious in 2012. In 2016, he took home the trophies for Best Dance/Electronic Album and Best Dance Recording.
