Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine also recalled when David Ellefson sued him in 2004
After the announcement of The Sick, the Dying… and the Dead!17th studio album by megadeth scheduled for September 2022, opened up about the dismissal of David Ellefsonbassist and one of the band’s co-founders, in 2021. The musician said it was a “difficult decision,” and explained how he “will no longer play music with him.”
Ellefson was fired from megadeth after a sexual conversation with a young woman appeared on social media. His bass recordings for the next album were later re-recorded by Steve DiGiorgioof testamentWhile James LoMenzo was chosen as the bassist’s permanent replacement.
In an interview with Metal Hammer, Dave Mustaine discussed the decision to let the former member leave the band. “Let me tell you this – it was a difficult decision that had to be made,” he said. “There were a lot of people involved and I had to decide, because unfortunately when you’re the frontmanit’s you who needs to put up with and face the music.”
“All I wanted to do was take a clean break, and not hurt anybody, not hurt the fans, and not hurt him,” he continued. mustaine. “I just wanted to move on, and I hope the gentleman in question is okay. I wonder how there was some adjustment that had to happen when it happened.”

Furthermore, in conversation with the Metal Hammer, Dave Mustaine also mentioned the time when Ellefson sued him in 2004, and claimed how the frontman owed millions of dollars in royalties. Although the process took place during a period in which Ellefson was no longer in the band, he was welcomed back into the lineup in 2010 and remained with the group until his resignation in 2021.
