In one of the most emblematic scenes in the animation WALL-E (2008), Commander McCrea fights against the autopilot of the futuristic spaceship Axiom, whose artificial intelligence had decided that remaining indefinitely wandering through space would be the best for its passengers. The commander already understood that they should return to Earth after seven centuries, to repopulate the planet.

We have a lot to learn from this scene. Data helps us enormously to make good decisions, but it is not enough. In many cases, the best choice depends on using our emotions, our humanity.

Artificial intelligence relies on past patterns to devise unprecedented strategies, but it is unable to change them. Therefore, the autopilot was even willing to liquidate its commander, as it worked with the information and a directive that Earth was an unhealthy place, at the time when the Axiom began its journey. McCrea, in turn, faced with evidence that the planet had been revitalized, decided that it was worth risking return.

The presence of artificial intelligence has been growing geometrically in our lives. Many companies seek to develop “general artificial intelligence”, one that will not be limited to performing a specific function, being capable of “thinking freely” on any topic, like the human mind. Its managers try to convince governments and the population of several countries that these systems would be the best option to improve life, “correcting imperfections” in components of society, such as public services and institutions.

If this happens, we will run a serious risk of seeing machines making bad decisions, despite being based on correct information, such as Axiom’s autopilot. When a choice affects everyone’s life, much more than data is needed: we need feelings and subjectivity, to see beyond the coldness of algorithms.

It is worth remembering that, in the same animation, the Earth has become an unhealthy place thanks to unrestrained consumption through campaigns by the megacorporation Buy-n-Large, which, in the name of “selling more to do good for everyone”, were probably created by algorithms. We must prevent such a powerful company from existing as much as possible, despite the fact that we already have several candidates for the position among technology giants.

Let it be clear: I do not fight artificial intelligence! On the contrary, I am a technology enthusiast, which opens up incredible possibilities for humanity in the most diverse areas. We just can’t hand over all our decisions to machines.

In another context, but perfectly applicable here, the Swiss Carl Jung, founder of analytical psychology, said: “know all the theories, master all the techniques, but when touching a human soul, be just another human soul.” Therefore, our growing collaboration with machines bears incredible fruit, but we need to continue controlling the helm of life with our humanity.
