Downton Abbey: a new era he really plays a lot of different rhythms: he’s funny, emotional and charming, and his relationships are often complex but also fun to watch. The end of the second center The film follows some of those same notes, bringing laughter and tears to the eyes of its viewers (and the center problem). However, the exact final scene fans finally got was not the one originally written in the film. Instead, director Simon Curtis revealed to Gossipify that he felt the original script wasn’t entirely correct, so he made a change.
Talk to the director before the streaming, digital, Blu-ray and DVD versions of Downton Abbey: a new era, Simon Curtis and I started talking about the final scene of the film. This scene sees Tom, Lucy and the baby returning to Downton to spend some joyful moments in the hallway as the portrait of the now deceased widowed countess, played by Dame Maggie Smith, looks up from the wall. It’s a moment of lighthearted glee after audiences have just witnessed and emotionally reacted to Lady Violet’s final moments on screen, with Carson even delivering a remarkably dark monologue from below. And Curtis told Gossipify that he purposely added that extra scene at the end, even though it wasn’t originally in the script.
I really felt like we needed an uplifting and upbeat ending, and the counterpoint of the newborn Violet, now a portrait on the wall, seemed like a good way to do it.
In reality, however, the widowed countess’s funeral was almost the last note of the film. This moment comes after she exhaled her last breath and said a memorable phrase to Denker like “I can’t feel myself dying” before taking her last breath of hers. While her line lends lightness to the moment, there is still a weeping and a pallor in this scene and the funeral scene that follows heard from the audience. Apparently that’s what Julian Fellowes originally wrote in the script, but Curtis saw it slightly differently.
To finish at the funeral it was [what was there] when I first read the script. But I think that extra twist is valuable. And it’s also very demonstrative of a group of actors playing a family that has become a family. And I like the fact that around the child there are the grandparents but also all the servants. It’s a beautiful picture, I think.
It’s interesting to focus on Maggie Smith Downton Abbey: a new era ended up being, especially given the questions raised when the film was announced whether Smith would actually be involved or not . (Some center fans have even gone so far as to express Violet Crawley was supposed to die during the events of the show. .) In the end, a lot is drawn from the character in the film, as the central mystery of the plot revolves around a romantic past and a mansion in France.
However, focusing on the widowed countess also meant there were going to be many serious moments towards the end of A new eralast but not least is the scene where Carson quotes Shakespeare in a touching monologue about Lady Violet, who told us it was “cool” to do on screen.
Carson and Lady Violet were a bit like two old soldiers, they had crossed the trenches together, they had a story. So, it was a good thing that the effect of his death spilled over to Carson. And Julian was very good throughout the series. People of that generation knew things, they knew a lot of poetry by heart, they could quote long pieces of poetry and Shakespeare and things like that in a way we can’t do today; it was part of education. So I think it was done intelligently and very well to show the effect of his death on the man downstairs who knew her best. He at least he had known her longer. It was nice to do it.
Yes Downton Abbey: a new era It ends up being the last film in the series, I was determined to finish on a very high note, and while Simon Curtis’ opinion matters a lot more than mine, I think the film really keeps coming with the ending that has been defined. . If you wanna give it a rewatch, A new era is currently available in digital format (opens in a new tab) and can be streamed on Peacock. Also, if you are a fan of printed films, A new era is available on Blu-ray and DVD (opens in a new tab) from 5 July.
