Billie Eilish reiterates environmental activism with vinyl made from recyclable materials: ‘Super conscious’

The singer is set to release her third studio album, ‘Hit Me Hard And Soft’, in May

Billie Eilish releases his third studio album on May 17th. In addition to not releasing any singles before the release of Hit Me Hard And Soft, she is trying to innovate with vinyl records made only from recyclable materials. The paint will be plant-based and the packaging will be made from sugar cane, for example.

“My parents have always kept me well informed and super aware that every choice we make and every action we take has an impact somewhere or someone, whether positive or negative, and that has always stuck with me,” said the singer (via BBC).

“I can’t just ignore what I know and move forward with my business and career without doing anything. This is simply not how I was raised, nor how I want to live my life.”

According to BBC, 5.9 million vinyl units were sold in the United Kingdom alone in 2023. Research from Keele University shows that each copy contains around 135g of PVC, with a carbon footprint of half a kilo of carbon dioxide. Based on this calculation, the growth in the consumption of vinyl records represents a footprint of almost 560 people per year.

Reviews

Billie Eilish reacted to the cancellation after giving his opinion on the number of vinyl versions that artists release. In a recent interview (via NME), the singer advocated for the climate and criticized musicians who sell several vinyl editions of their albums to increase profits.

“It’s irritating to me that we’re still at a point where you care so much about the numbers and so much about making money — and it’s all your favorite artists doing this sh*t,” the singer said.

Some vehicles, such as the TMZ and the The New York Postinterpreted the comments as a hint to Taylor Swift. Folklorereleased in 2020, for example, had eight vinyl versions, while Midnightsfrom 2022, won five editions.

Eilish responded to the accusations with a story on his Instagram:

Okay, so, it would be awesome if people would stop putting words in my mouth and actually read what I said. I wasn’t talking about anyone in particular, these are systemic problems in the industry. And when it comes to variants, many artists release them, including me! What I said clearly in the article. The climate crisis is now and it’s about all of us being part of the problem and trying to do better, dammit.
