Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Bruce Horak reveals his “only concern” about Hemmer’s big twist

Attention! The following contains spoilers for the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds episode, “All Those Who Wander”. Read at your own risk!

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds had perhaps its most devastating episode, like Agency lost even more crew another terrible exchange with him horn. Ultimately, this resulted in the loss of the chief engineer and one of the most beloved characters of the first season, Hemming. After Hemmer’s unexpected departure, the actor Bruce Horak shared the one concern he had about the character’s death with Gossipify.

Hemmer’s death occurred shortly after it was revealed that Gorn’s infants (who it looked very different than their adult counterparts) bred by spraying acid on the hosts. Hemmer was hit with a slime at the beginning of the episode and by the end it was clear that he was feeling the effects.

After seeing that an infected passenger on the ship eventually had multiple Gorns exploding inside his body, Hemmer decided to get off the ship and spare the crew from another fight with other little Gorns. Hemmer said goodbye to Uura and others, got off and fell off the ship in the Cold Valley before the Gorn was born. Hemmer actor Bruce Horak shared his thoughts on the big day of filming and the one concern he had before the big release:

I was scared and couldn’t wait to shoot this scene. I feared the burden of knowing that this is ultimately a stepping stone and story builder for Uhura’s journey and just hoped to find the right tone. I was thrilled to do it because every actor wants a good death scene and that was my only concern when [showrunner] Enrico [Alonso Myers] mentioned the arch. [I said] “Please make it look good. Make death look beautiful. I’ve read it, it’s beautiful, I’ve seen it, it’s even more beautiful than I imagined.

As previously mentioned by Bruce Horak, Hemmer’s sacrifice and his words to Uhura eventually led to her remaining in Starfleet. In their final conversation, Hemmer encouraged Uhura to bond with Starfleet and take root instead of moving forward, so as not to lose more people she cares about.

One thing Paramount + subscribers could take comfort in this moment is to know that Bruce Horak always knew this his aenar character I was dying. There’s also something else that makes Hemmer’s death easier for Horak to bear: it’s not the end of his time in star Trek. He shared:

I can officially say that Bruce Horak’s career on Star Trek is not over. I can’t share much beyond that, but at least I can say that I am absolutely thrilled and honestly very happy with how this season has gone.

It’s like this, very similar Brent Spinner and the other star Trek actors who reappear in the franchise, just like Bruce Horak. Unfortunately, I’m not sure there will be a return for strange new worlds‘chief engineer, what could be better. After all, Hemmer’s unlikely survival might make us feel temporarily better, but it would end up belittling a phenomenal exit for a character who meant so much in Season 1. The good news is that Horak will be back, and we’ll just have to wait and see how and when.

Star Trek: Strange New WorldsFinal broadcasts of the first season to Paramount + Thursday 7th July. After that, the wait continues for the next franchise show so it’s a good thing there is still a lot to enjoy in 2022 in terms of Emigrate.
