The clip focuses on the choreography to highlight the influences of the song, which closes the circle of funk with references to Miami Bass and danceable hip-hop
Anitta released the video for “Grip,” which arrives alongside the release of her long-awaited new album, “Funk Generation,” the first of her international phase — and her new record label, Republic Records (the same as Taylor Swift ).
The song is less than two minutes long, but packs in a lot of musical information. The song closes the circle, bringing funk back to its origins, sung in English in the language of Miami Bass and 80s danceable hip-hop. It has 808 bass beats, absolute vintage, sampled guitars in the style of “Everybody Dance Now”. (C&C Music Factory), rhythmic hiss as in “Push It” (Salt-N-Pepa), explicit lyrics in the best verse “Me So Horny” (2 Live Crew) and an envious dance groove in “Get Up” ( Tecnotronica ). And in the middle of this arsenal of references, Rio’s funk, with a subtle passage of samba school levada between the programming shifts of the electronic beat.
On the Internet, those looking for confusion have already reported similarities with “Tá Solteira”, by FBC and VHOOR, released in 2021. Nothing to do with this, there the reference is different: “Planet Rock” (Afrika Bambaataa), which is electro, pre-Miami Bass and totally essential. The controversy does not exist. Anitta used 80s influences to create modern, vibrant music, not a pastiche of old funk.
The clip accompanying “Grip” was recorded in black and white and begins with a “money shot”. Literally, the first image is a close-up of a bottle of Anitta’s intimate perfume, appearing directly behind it in a triangle of white panties that fill the entire screen. The rest is a lot of choreography in the middle of a crowd of people in a party atmosphere, with legs open, asses thrown and a lot of heat. A detail that will make foreign listeners shudder is that her lyrics are a great compliment to Anitta’s particularly scented side, referring to the pleasure of licking her lips.
The album “Funk Generation” was released this Friday (26/4) and is the topic of the day on social media.
