Almost 40 years, RiR continues to try to present trends for the growing music festival market in Brazil

On the eve of the 40th anniversary of the first festival, in 1985, Rock in Rio 2024 is already taking place at a celebratory pace: this is because it will be the 10th edition in Brazilian territory. The event will take place at Olympic Park in Rio de Janeiroand the general sale will begin on May 23, at 7 p.m., on Ticket collector. The shows take place from 13 to 15 and from 19 to 22 September.

Of this list, only the city of Rio de Janeiro and the Portuguese capital continue to host the event: in fact, RiR Lisboa takes place in less than a month, over two weekends in the second half of June.

The main attractions of Rock in Rio 2024

There are those who protest that the event is no longer just about rock music, but the organizers don’t seem worried: RiR celebrates the diversity of musical styles and has used the entire width of the Olympic Park to do SO. In total, the 2024 edition will feature eight spaces and already has some confirmed actions.

See the highlights of each Rock in Rio space here:

World stage: maintaining the location of the latest editions, considered the hub of the main presentations, it will have six LED screens, for a total of 830m² of screen so that even those who are not very close can clearly see the idols.

Sunset phase: famous for hosting partnerships that are usually successful with the public and critics, Sunset acquires even more prominence with the change of location, which allows a wider audience to be welcomed into the space.

Favela Space: Exclusive stage for the Rio edition of RiR, it focuses on valorising the suburbs of the Wonderful City and the artists of the local scene.

Although the 40th anniversary of the first edition will only occur in early 2025, the 2024 festival was conceived as a great celebration of this legacy, which today is considered intangible cultural heritage of the region. Rio de Janeiro in 2022. Proof of the impact are the locations chosen in these 10 national editions of the festival.

For outsiders, saying Cidade do Rock can be confusing, which is more than fair, given that RiR has already been hosted in four different places. In 1985 and 2001 the space used was Barra da Tijuca and has already hosted some events of the 2007 Pan American Games, as well as being an Olympic Village in 2016.

This versatility over the years is reflected in the choice of name adopted by the space today: Complexo Olímpico Cidade do Rock.

The 1991 edition was held in Maracana Stadium, but it was a short period lasting only one festival. OR Athletes’ Parka work also created for the 2016 Olympics, he previously debuted with Rock in Rio in 2011, 2013 and 2015.

Since the capacity of 85 thousand people is considered limited for the size of the event, RiR used the space of Olympic Park in Rio de Janeiro since 2017. The area is ready to host the celebrations also in 2024.
